The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has instituted a significant pause in the graduation process for a group of 178 students, effectively withholding their degrees pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into alleged alterations to over 500 academic results. This development follows a recent investigation by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, which revealed a pattern of suspicious activity involving students and other individuals attempting to manipulate the university’s academic records.

The investigation, which began following reports of irregularities in the university’s system, established a clear link between several students and a deliberate effort to alter results across various disciplines. Professor Mawutor stated unequivocally that ‘some unscrupulous students and some unscrupulous individuals breached our system by hijacking our system and changing results in our system,’ emphasizing the unauthorized manipulation of academic data.

He explained that the investigation uncovered a network of individuals who had, in an attempt to influence grades and rankings, paid others to alter records. Specifically, the university’s Information Systems and Technology Directorate (ISTD) and the investigative committee have been instrumental in detecting these alterations and identifying the individuals involved. Prof Mawutor commended the ISTD and investigative committee for their efforts in uncovering the scheme, stating that the university would continue its investigative and disciplinary processes. Crucially, the university has implemented a policy preventing these students from graduating while investigations and disciplinary proceedings are ongoing, stating that ‘some of these culprits were supposed to graduate, but due to the hard work of our ISTD team and the investigative committee, we have withheld their graduation until further notice.’

Prof. Mawutor underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of academic records, emphasizing that while the practice of manipulating results has occurred before, the scale of this latest incident – a significant and concerning number of alterations – presents a particularly serious challenge. He acknowledged that while the manipulation has been a recurring issue at UPSA, this case is markedly more substantial, representing a notable departure from previous instances of data manipulation.

According to a university statement released earlier this week, the investigation is ongoing and is currently focusing on identifying all those involved in the scheme. The university has stated that it will continue to address the matter through its investigative and disciplinary processes, and is committed to providing full transparency regarding the findings of the investigation. A spokesperson for UPSA stated that the university has issued a formal notice to the students involved, informing them of the suspension and outlining the next steps in the investigation. The university has not provided specific details regarding the exact number of records impacted by the alterations, only stating that the investigation is still in its early stages and the full scope of the problem is yet to be determined. A total of 178 students have been identified as potentially involved, according to the university’s records.

The incident has sparked considerable concern within the university community, with many students expressing disappointment and frustration. Several students have voiced their concerns regarding the university’s handling of the situation, demanding a full explanation and assurance of the investigation’s progress. The university has promised a public update regarding the investigation’s progress in the coming days, and a detailed report detailing the findings will be released to the public after the investigation is complete. The situation represents a major setback for the university’s reputation and credibility, raising questions about the university’s commitment to academic integrity and transparency.”
