Sher Tremonte LLP has formally initiated proceedings to seek a retaining lien against Diddy’s Lil Rod case, demanding the freezing of his legal files until substantial fees are met. This move follows a protracted legal battle from producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones, who initiated a lawsuit in 2024 alleging sexual assault, harassment, and drugging by Diddy. The lawsuit centers on allegations that Diddy engaged in inappropriate and unlawful behavior towards the plaintiff, escalating to a critical incident during studio recordings. The firm’s actions are a direct consequence of Diddy’s substantial arrears in payment, evidenced by a 2011 court ruling where a judge permitted a law firm to maintain a client’s files until payment was made, a crucial element of the retaining lien strategy.

Sher Tremonte LLP is utilizing a legal maneuver known as a retaining lien – a standard practice within the legal profession where a firm retains a client’s files until payment is completed. This strategy directly impacts Diddy’s next legal representation, which would not receive the files until Sher Tremonte is fully compensated, adhering to a rule established by the firm in 2011, where a lawyer can quit a case if the client fails to pay or refuses to cooperate. The firm’s analysis, detailed in a recent report, reveals that the lien is contingent upon a substantial balance of fees, costs, and expenses incurred during Sher Tremonte’s representation of Diddy.

The case began with a motion filed by Sher Tremonte LLP as part of the lawsuit from producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones against Diddy. Jones sued Diddy back in 2024, alleging that Diddy engaged in sexually aggravated and harassing conduct, resulting in drugging during studio sessions. Diddy denied these claims, branding them as false and defamatory. The firm’s strategy is further underscored by a 2011 case where a judge granted a law firm the right to retain a client’s files until payment was made, providing a precedent for their current actions.

The firm’s initial communication with the plaintiff, as reported by AllHipHop, detailed the financial problems facing Diddy, with Michael Tremonte stating that Mr. Combs owes a significant amount and has been struggling to pay for months. Tremonte underscored the firm’s demand for immediate payment and a cessation of communication with Mr. Combs. Notably, the firm sent emails to the plaintiff on September 3rd and September 11th, both times stating that it would quit if Diddy did not pay and agree to communication.

This is not the first instance of this month’s actions. The firm also requested to quit Diddy’s other case, a $100 million lawsuit against Nexstar Media, in September 16, citing no pay and no contact. The request was similar to the previous one, detailing the same reasons:

Since 1996, AllHipHop has been covering this story, documenting the ongoing legal battles and financial disputes surrounding Diddy’s case. The firm has worked with Diddy before, providing representation for him during trial in New York. The firm’s team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, successfully defended Diddy on charges related to a crime ring and sex trafficking, resulting in a judge granting him more than four years of prison.

Diddy has received two prior warnings from the firm, sent via mail on September 3rd and September 11th, both times stating that it would quit if he did not pay and start talking. The firm’s power of attorney email both times provided the same word.

Sher Tremonte has been working with Diddy before, with the firm partner Anna Estevao being on his team when he went on trial last year in New York. That team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, got Diddy cleared on the top charges tied to a crime ring and sex trafficking. Jurors did find him guilty on two smaller charges tied to prostitution. A judge last October gave him more than four years in prison at a federal prison in New Jersey.
