Wales’ journey through the Nations League has been fraught with challenges, marked by a string of losses and a persistent struggle to maintain their position. The pressure is mounting, and head coach Craig Bellamy is acutely aware of the significance of this upcoming clash against Denmark, a game that could prove decisive in determining their fate within the competition.

With no wins in their five matches in 2026, Bellamy and Wales are facing a daunting task, and the aim is now to create even more history – to upset the odds and preserve their Nations League A status. The pressure is immense, and the team’s performance has been scrutinized intensely.

Bellamy’s history with Denmark is a crucial factor in this situation. He holds a remarkable record with the Danes, including a pivotal goal in 1998 – a moment that remains etched in Welsh football history. The coach’s aim is to recapture that spark and build on this impressive legacy.

Do Wales have what it takes to survive the League A stage? The answer, undeniably, is a resounding yes, but the path to success is proving more complex than anticipated.

In 1998, Bellamy arrived on the scene as a reserve, a crucial role that would reshape the team’s trajectory. He debuted in a match against Portugal, netting an 87th-minute goal – a moment that instantly galvanized the Welsh squad and became a defining moment in their Euro 2000 qualifying campaign.

It ended Wales seven games without a win, and the result rescued boss Bobby Gould. Roberts, the former striker, recalled the impact of that goal: “It was a magnificent header and probably saved Gould," Roberts told the BBC’s Feast of Football podcast. “All I saw was 14 fantastic Welshmen out there giving everything.” He added that the moment was a pivotal moment for the team, a moment of pure joy for the players, and a moment of visceral relief for the manager.

Bellamy himself recounted the game’s atmosphere, describing it as chaotic and intense. “The kit was awful; I looked awful,” he said. “I was a young kid coming through at the time, scoring a lot of goals in the Championship. I was 19; everything was going in at that moment.” The game itself was a brutal display of Welsh resilience, a testament to the team’s determination.

Bellamy emphasized that the game wasn’t about individual brilliance, but rather a collective effort. “I got loads of stick for it after the game as well, from the players in the changing room, and they weren’t too happy,” added the Wales boss. “For me it was one of the happiest moments of my career at 19 years of age, and the players looked at me with such disgust.”

Jay Dasilva, born just six months before Bellamy’s moment of magic in Copenhagen, revealed that the head coach hadn’t mentioned his goal to the squad. However, the Coventry City left-back vowed to “pull him up on it” after facing the media on the eve of the Nations League contest with the Danes. The Welsh contingent, led by the young Dasilva, were determined to ensure Bellamy’s success.

Nations League Group A4

Sunday, September 27th, 17:00 BST, Parken Stadium, Copenhagen

Live on BBC iPlayer, BBC One Wales, BBC Sounds, BBC Radio Wales, Radio Cymru and 5 Live, BBC Sport website and app, plus live text commentary.

This fixture represents a significant moment in the Nations League, with Wales facing Denmark, a match that will undoubtedly be closely watched by fans around the globe.

Bellamy has been tasked with navigating a challenging path, as Brian Riemer’s side lost their opening Nations League A game on Thursday night, beaten 3-2 by Norway in Oslo. Denmark also failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, and Bellamy’s men, too, suffered penalty shootout heartbreak against Czechia.

Denmark boss Riemer stated that the match with Wales is a “must-win” for Bellamy, with the coach adding that he could “understand the frustrations” of the Danish supporters. The Wales head coach felt it was wise not to “poke the bear” when it comes to making any predictions about the contest with the somewhat wounded Danes.

However, he will be quietly confident that his side have a chance of creating yet more positive headlines against Denmark as they bid to prove they have what it takes to do the business in the top tier of the Nations League.

The fixture with Wales is a crucial test for Bellamy, and the outcome could have profound implications for Wales’ position within the competition.
