The Ashanti Region has successfully hosted the National Launch of the Regional Taekwondo Awareness Programme (RTAP), a significant initiative spearheaded by the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, in collaboration with the National Sports Authority, Ghana Olympic Committee, Ghana National Council of Private Schools, and the Ashanti Taekwondo Association. The event, held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday, September 25th, underscores a concerted effort to elevate Taekwondo beyond its traditional competitive role and foster its broader benefits for young people across the region and beyond. The RTAP is designed to broaden the sport’s reach and impact on the lives of young individuals, recognizing its potential as a valuable tool for holistic development.
The programme’s core objective is to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of Taekwondo amongst youth, moving beyond simply sport to encompass discipline, confidence, fitness, and respect for others. President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Frederick L. Otu, emphasized the critical need to increase awareness of the sport, highlighting that the current level of engagement is insufficient to meet the growing demand for Taekwondo participation. He stressed the importance of early exposure to the discipline, confidence, and physical benefits inherent in the practice.
He underscored that introducing Taekwondo to children at an early age is vital, noting that the sport actively nurtures these crucial qualities. “We need to equip young people with the tools to develop discipline, build resilience, and cultivate healthy lifestyles,” Otu stated. The Ghana National Council of Private Schools echoed this sentiment, advocating for expanded opportunities for Taekwondo students to participate within their schools and communities. They proposed strengthening collaboration between schools, sports federations, and other stakeholders to facilitate greater student engagement.
The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, Nana Gyaama Dakwa, highlighted the significance of sustained support for sporting disciplines outside the mainstream, emphasizing that initiatives like the RTAP can contribute significantly to the region’s sporting landscape. He noted that the programme provides a vital pathway for identifying and nurturing sporting talent, and a chance to broaden the sporting landscape for the region.
The Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, Edward Akanzu-Ise, passionately advocated for accessible Taekwondo for pupils and students, stating that it could complement academic development by encouraging concentration, discipline, and physical fitness. He further noted that Taekwondo can act as a valuable tool for enhancing learning by promoting a holistic approach to education.
The involvement of key figures like Hon. Frank Amoakohene and Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang, representing the Ashanti Regional Government, further underscored the importance of prioritizing youth development. The event’s commencement with a demonstration by athletes from the Ashanti Taekwondo Association, featuring Poomsae, sparring, basic techniques, and self-defense, provided a tangible visual representation of the sport’s skills and training. The demonstration was lauded as a practical demonstration of the sport’s capabilities – demonstrating the skills, discipline, and physical conditioning involved.
Furthermore, the event concluded with a symbolic unveiling of the Regional Taekwondo Awareness Programme, formally launching the initiative’s ongoing efforts to promote Taekwondo as a sport that fosters physical fitness, discipline, self-defence, talent development, and personal growth. The launch represents a crucial step in bolstering the region’s sporting landscape and fostering a stronger connection between sports and education. Organisers anticipate that the RTAP will continue to promote Taekwondo as a dynamic and valuable contributor to the lives of young people, solidifying its place as a significant force for positive youth development within the Ashanti Region and potentially beyond.
This initiative aims to broaden the sporting landscape and provide opportunities for young athletes to develop their talents and capabilities, contributing to the overall well-being of the region’s youth. The event’s success demonstrates a shared commitment to investing in the future of the next generation.
