The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning, revealing that 3.8 percent of adults in Ghana have considered suicide, a figure that demands immediate and substantial attention. This alarming statistic, coupled with 2.3 percent of individuals making attempts, underscores a growing crisis within the nation’s mental health landscape, prompting calls for intensified preventative measures and robust support systems. The figures, released in Accra during a launch of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day, were presented by Dr. Fiona Braka, WHO Country Representative to Ghana. Dr. Braka emphasized that this number represents a significant challenge and highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to address the issue of suicide within the country. The data, derived from the 2023 Ghana STEPS Survey, further underscores the prevalence of suicidal thoughts amongst young people, a vulnerability that necessitates targeted interventions. “Every suicide is a tragedy that has profound social, emotional, and economic consequences for families, for friends, for workplaces, and for communities,” Dr. Braka stated, stressing the gravity of the situation. The government’s recent decriminalization of attempted suicide in March 2023, a move Dr. Braka lauded as a crucial step, represents a paradigm shift from punitive measures towards compassionate care and protection of human dignity. “This reform signifies a fundamental change from punishment to care and compassion, recognizing that suicide and suicidal behavior are public health and mental health concerns that require proactive support, treatment, and safeguarding of human dignity,” she explained. Dr. Braka urged all stakeholders – including government, health professionals, civil society organizations, communities, and other partners – to remain steadfast in their commitment to strengthening support systems for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors. The report details a case of a 37-year-old woman who allegedly committed suicide at Kasoa, resulting in the discovery of a body near 95, and a separate incident of a police officer found dead in Akweteyman, further fueling the urgency of the situation. The WHO is urging further investigation and analysis to determine the underlying causes and factors contributing to this alarming trend, aiming for a sustained commitment to addressing this critical public health issue.
