A landmark legal settlement has concluded a protracted dispute between Jermaine Dupri and Sony Music Entertainment, resulting in a $18 million agreement. The case, initially brought in Manhattan federal court on July 6, 2023, centered on alleged mismanagement of royalties generated from decades of So So Def recordings. Dupri’s companies, comprising So So Def Recordings and So So Def Productions, initiated the lawsuit, alleging Sony had inadequately accounted for royalties owed to the label, particularly concerning records from the early 1990s. The initial complaint detailed a significant shortfall of at least $2.2 million in unpaid producer and override royalties, along with substantial unpaid royalties for artists like Kris Kross, Xscape, and Jagged Edge, as well as music involving artists Dupri produced outside the label’s direct control. The dispute escalated when Sony began issuing new statements and amended records in 2023, prompting a comprehensive audit by an independent firm. The lawsuit, initially brought under the claim of failing to properly account for royalties, was largely characterized by a desire to resolve the dispute privately, with neither party disclosing the precise settlement amount. A post shared by Jermaine Dupri on Instagram indicates the parties reached an agreement before Sony filed a formal response, though the court’s decision did not constitute a finding against either side. The dismissal of the case, after a lengthy legal battle, was deemed ‘without prejudice’, meaning the court’s investigation did not determine the validity of Dupri’s claims, although the outcome did not impact the underlying allegations.
