Zoomlion Ghana Limited has initiated a seven-day disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Oti Region, a response to recent flooding impacting numerous municipalities, as part of a broader initiative to prevent disease outbreaks and bolster environmental sanitation following the significant disruption in parts of the country. This comprehensive effort, commencing simultaneously in the Krachi East and West Municipalities, is designed to encompass all nine Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) within the region.
The exercise, spearheaded by Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s Oti Regional Manager, Mr. Joseph Buabeng, represents a significant expansion of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program and its commitment to safeguarding public health and supporting local authorities in tackling sanitation challenges. It is a proactive measure aimed at mitigating the risks associated with flooding and poor sanitation, particularly concerning waterborne diseases and the spread of harmful pathogens.
The scope of the intervention extends far beyond conventional fumigation, incorporating a multifaceted approach to control disease vectors. Specifically, the exercise targets key areas of public concern, including markets, shops, sheds, public toilets, drains, gutters, refuse container sites, waste-dumping areas, and flood-prone communities. Zoomlion is meticulously assessing potential breeding grounds for disease, recognizing the heightened risk of cholera and other communicable illnesses following the recent flooding.
Mr. Buabeng emphasized the importance of this intervention as part of the company’s commitment to protecting residents from diseases that commonly emerge after disasters. He stated that the exercise is driven by a proactive approach to safeguard public health and protect lives, reflecting a commitment to resilience and preparedness.
Furthermore, the exercise is aligned with a directive from the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, which underscores the importance of supporting communities across Ghana in controlling vector-borne diseases and reducing the threat posed by harmful pathogens. The initiative will include targeted strategies such as the development and maintenance of engineered landfill sites, enhanced waste transportation regulation, and the establishment of strategically located waste transfer stations in rapidly growing municipalities. The Environmental Health Officer at the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Mr. Adem Atiase, has commended Zoomlion’s efforts, recognizing their complementary role in enhancing the region’s environmental health and contributing to safer, cleaner, and healthier living environments for residents.
The exercise is intrinsically linked to Zoomlion’s nationwide disinfection and disinfestation program, designed to strengthen collaboration with local authorities, improve environmental sanitation, control disease vectors, prevent potential disease outbreaks, and promote cleaner, safer, and healthier communities across the nation. This program will continue to reinforce the company’s commitment to proactive measures, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience within the region.
