Following a significant incident involving a damaged 500mm pipeline, the Ghana Water and Sewer Authority (GWL) has announced a temporary water supply interruption impacting several communities in Western Accra, Accra West. The disruption began following an excavation project between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction, undertaken by the AWERCO Construction Ltd company. According to GWL, the excavation caused a catastrophic breach in the pipeline, resulting in the complete flooding of the trench and a disruption of water supply to several residential areas within Western Accra.
This incident, detailed in a press release issued on August 28, 2026, represents a substantial challenge for the region. GWL stated that the 500mm-diameter pipeline had been damaged by AWERCO Construction Ltd during drainage construction, a process that necessitated the excavation of the trench.
As a result of the damage, the entire trench became submerged, effectively halting water flow to several communities in Western Accra. GWL immediately initiated a response, deploying its engineering and technical teams to assess the situation and begin the crucial repair process. The company emphasized that the initial phase of the repair work involved preliminary dewatering of the trench to allow access to the affected section of the pipeline.
Furthermore, GWL confirmed that preparatory work was already underway at one end of the damaged pipeline, with the dewatering exercise continuing to provide the necessary access for the repair team. The company acknowledged that the interruption is a significant inconvenience for residents and is actively working to restore normal water supply as quickly as possible. GWL has stated that it will provide further updates regarding the repair progress and expected restoration timeline through its official channels, including its website and social media platforms.
The affected areas include several neighborhoods in Western Accra, including Accra West, and will include several other locations in the area. GWL has stated that the temporary water supply interruption will affect areas such as Lapaz, Dome, Achimota, and 13 other areas in Accra West, as noted in a separate press release. The company’s commitment is to ensure that all efforts are made to restore normal water supply as soon as feasible, acknowledging the impact this disruption has on residents.
GWL has cautioned customers for the disruption and assured them that the teams are actively working to restore normal water supply through their efforts.
