The President of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Oti Region, Emmanuel Donkor, has issued a strong call for a fundamental shift in governmental policy, demanding a greater commitment to including PWDs within major livelihood and social intervention programs designed to bolster poverty reduction and foster self-reliance. His statement, delivered during an interview with Adom News, underscores the urgency of addressing systemic exclusion within the region’s economic landscape.
Mr. Donkor emphasized the current state of affairs, noting that while targeted support for some PWDs exists, a significant number remain largely excluded from broader initiatives such as Nkoko Nkitinkitin, agribusiness programs, and other government-sponsored livelihood schemes. He stated, ‘Many PWDs are still facing challenges in accessing these crucial programs, hindering their ability to achieve sustainable economic independence.’
His request for greater inclusion is rooted in the belief that providing PWDs with access to long-term economic opportunities, rather than relying solely on sporadic assistance, would yield far greater results. He explained that the current system of sporadic support is insufficient to create consistent income streams and sustainable growth. ‘The support we receive is helpful, but we need to be actively involved in programs that cultivate consistent income and advancement,’ he asserted, highlighting a crucial point.
Mr. Donkor stressed the importance of deliberate and inclusive governmental policies regarding disability inclusion. He called for a concerted effort to ensure that PWDs are afforded equal opportunities to participate fully in economic activities. He further detailed that the Krachi East Municipal Assembly utilized the distribution of items – including refrigerators, industrial sewing machines, farm inputs, cash support, fufu pounding machines, and cassava grinding machines – to benefit a diverse range of PWD beneficiaries. This initiative, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) allocated from a five percent percentage of disability-related funding, represents a tangible demonstration of the government’s commitment to economic empowerment.
The MCE for Krachi East, Sarfo Nketia, echoed this sentiment, stating that beneficiaries should utilize the provided equipment to pursue their intended economic goals. He cautioned against selling the equipment, stating that the Assembly would intensify monitoring to ensure the equipment’s proper utilization. He reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to promoting inclusive development and ensuring that vulnerable groups receive opportunities to improve their living conditions. He commended President John Mahama’s efforts to prioritize social interventions that center on vulnerable groups.
