On Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport, President John Dramani Mahama addressed concerns regarding airport workers soliciting tips from visitors. This incident underscores a growing challenge to Ghana’s international image, particularly concerning perceptions of hospitality and professionalism within the aviation sector. The President stated, ‘I’m happy that the Ghana Airports Company Limited and the Civil Aviation Authority and other institutions working at the airport are taking a tough stance against soliciting and begging visitors for tips. It reflects very badly on our country.’

This initiative follows a recent, albeit preliminary, review of interactions between airport workers and visitors, where the practice of soliciting tips has been identified as a significant impediment to positive perceptions. The President emphasized that the manner in which visitors are received at immigration, baggage handling, traffic management, and other service points – all critical elements of the airport experience – significantly shapes these impressions. ‘Every institution and every worker at this airport contributes to Ghana’s image,’ he asserted, highlighting the importance of maintaining a professional and courteous environment.

The GACL has, in response, dismissed two car park workers over alleged instances of soliciting tips, a move that has ignited debate. President Mahama further stressed that workers must prioritize professionalism and courtesy, ensuring visitors have a positive experience from the moment they arrive. He noted that the quality of service provided at the airport directly impacts the first and final impressions of Ghana, influencing tourism, business travel, and overall national prestige.

The planned airport development, scheduled to feature two hotels, more than 2,000 parking spaces, a pedestrian link to the terminal, and a shopping mall with a food court, retail and office facilities, is intended to enhance the airport’s functionality and attract visitors. The addition of a sky lounge and sky observatory, offering panoramic views of aircraft operations, is a significant investment designed to further solidify Ghana’s position as a regional tourism destination. The project represents a substantial investment in infrastructure and tourism, aiming to improve the airport’s appeal and contribute to the country’s economic growth. The government anticipates the development will boost the economy and create jobs, though critics remain concerned about the potential impact on employment in the sector.

Initial reports indicate that the crackdown is part of a broader effort to address the issue, with authorities exploring strategies to enhance visitor satisfaction and safeguard Ghana’s image on the global stage. The President’s remarks highlight the importance of maintaining a positive image for the nation, reflecting a commitment to upholding standards and fostering a welcoming environment for travelers and visitors.”

This situation has prompted discussions among stakeholders regarding the need for stricter regulations and increased monitoring of airport worker behavior. The long-term implications of this policy are yet to be fully understood, but it undoubtedly represents a significant shift in the approach to managing airport interactions and projecting Ghana’s image internationally.
