President John Dramani Mahama has signaled a renewed commitment to addressing a persistent issue impacting Ghana’s international image – the practice of airport workers soliciting or begging visitors for tips. The President’s remarks, delivered on August 27th during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at Accra International Airport, underscore a growing concern regarding the perceived negative impact of such interactions on the country’s image among international visitors. The issue has been steadily escalating, with President Mahama emphasizing the critical role of airport workers in shaping the overall visitor experience.

He stated unequivocally that every interaction between visitors and airport personnel – encompassing everything from immigration and baggage handling to traffic management and security – contributes significantly to Ghana’s national image. ‘It reflects very badly on our country,’ President Mahama asserted, highlighting the importance of fostering a culture of professionalism and courtesy within the aviation sector. This is a matter of national pride, he emphasized, and the administration intends to take decisive action.

The President’s remarks follow a recent announcement by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to implement stricter measures against workers engaging in soliciting or begging visitors for tips. The GACL has already dismissed two car park workers for alleged involvement in this practice, a move that has been interpreted as a significant escalation of the crackdown. However, the President’s broader perspective frames this as a crucial step in revitalizing the airport’s role as a key gateway for international visitors.

Furthermore, the new airport development project, which includes two hotels, over 2,000 parking bays, a pedestrian connector to the terminal, a shopping mall with a food court, retail and office spaces, and a sky lounge and sky observatory, demonstrates a significant investment in enhancing the airport experience. The plan is designed to improve the overall visitor experience, with a particular focus on creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for travelers. According to a report by the Ghana Tourism Authority, the airport’s role is vital for attracting tourists, and the goal is to cultivate a positive perception of Ghana among visitors.

The GCAA’s stance reflects a broader effort to safeguard the integrity of the airport’s operations. President Mahama stressed that ‘every institution and every worker at this airport contributes to Ghana’s image,’ and that the airport’s success is inextricably linked to the quality of the visitor experience. He continued, ‘The welcome at immigration, the efficiency in baggage handling, the cleanliness and courtesy of service providers – all contribute to visitors’ first and last impressions of the country.’ The aim is to create a positive and memorable experience for everyone, from the moment they arrive to the moment they depart. The President acknowledged the importance of tourism and the airport’s role as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic growth.

Statistics show that the airport handles approximately 3 million passengers annually, making it a vital economic driver. The GCAA anticipates that the new development will attract a greater number of visitors, boosting Ghana’s tourism sector and further strengthening its image on the global stage. The government is also investing in training and education to ensure that airport workers uphold the highest standards of professionalism and hospitality, reflecting a conscious effort to improve the visitor experience and solidify Ghana’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. The full impact of this crackdown will be closely monitored, with the government committed to fostering a positive and welcoming environment for all visitors.”

Data indicates that the airport’s annual revenue generates approximately $2.5 billion, making it a crucial component of Ghana’s national economy. The new development is projected to create hundreds of jobs, further stimulating economic growth and contributing to the country’s prosperity.
