The Iranian rial has experienced a catastrophic decline against the US dollar, plummeting to a new historical low of $1 on the free market following the United States’ intensified sanctions, marking a significant blow to the country’s economy and its people’s daily lives.

Iran’s economy has been severely impacted by decades of US and international sanctions, particularly targeting its nuclear program. These sanctions, initially imposed in response to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, have crippled the country’s economic activity, leading to widespread inflation and a growing sense of misery for the Iranian populace.

Al Jazeera tracked the prices of essential goods – food, clothing, and medicine – across Tehran, comparing them to pre-war levels. Before the war, 2 million rials could purchase approximately 4kg of tomatoes, half a kilo of chicken, and a small amount of cooking oil. Today, this amount can only buy about half as much, with the average price of tomatoes increasing by an alarming 71%, chicken by a staggering 74%, and cooking oil by a massive 177%.

These price increases are driven by a complex interplay of factors. The government-imposed minimum wage, while providing a baseline for workers, fails to adequately compensate for the economic downturn, and the lack of sustained wage growth exacerbates the problem. Furthermore, the US naval blockade of Iranian ports has disrupted imports and exports, further limiting Iran’s access to international markets.

The government’s subsidy on baby formula, intended to mitigate the impact of the rial’s decline, is insufficient to meet the growing needs of families, particularly those struggling to afford basic necessities like childcare costs, which have risen to a staggering $500,000 per week.

Amidst these challenges, the government-approved minimum wage for the current Iranian calendar year ending in March 2027 is 166 million rials ($82). With government assistance and benefits, the figure comes to less than 220 million rials ($108). Zamir, a 35-year-old retail worker from Tehran, noted that sales have plummeted by 40% compared to last year, and he is struggling to keep his business afloat, highlighting the widespread economic distress.

For Iranian families, this crisis has resulted in a fundamental shift in their purchasing habits and priorities. Afsaneh*, a 35-year-old mother of a one-year-old, says her family’s weekly grocery bill has increased by 20 to 30%, significantly impacting their ability to afford food.

“Before the war, we could think about what we wanted to do three or six months down the road, but now our only concern is making it to the end of the month with the income we have,” Afsaneh told Al Jazeera. “My husband and I both work, and we have a one-year-old child. The daily cost of childcare at daycare centres has now reached around 500,000 tomans [5 million rials], which is difficult for us to afford.”

The government has implemented measures to mitigate the impact, including a partial subsidy on baby formula, but these efforts are insufficient to address the broader economic challenges. The falling rial has pushed up the cost of goods, while sanctions have severely restricted Iran’s access to international markets, further complicating the situation.

The crisis is not merely about the value of the currency; it represents a fundamental erosion of economic stability and a deepening of hardship for ordinary Iranians.

Salama*, a 28-year-old fisher in Hormozgan, Iran’s southern coastal province, reflects the widespread struggle. “We used to do our weekly grocery shopping for around 500,000 tomans [$2.5], but now we have to spend at least 5 million tomans [$25] for the same groceries, and we’ve had to cut back on things like meat and chicken or eliminate them altogether.”

For those working in vital sectors, such as manufacturing and agriculture, the impact is amplified. The value of today’s pay can fall before the next payday, creating a significant financial burden.

The war damage has disrupted production, while a US naval blockade of Iranian ports has complicated imports and exports, significantly hindering Iran’s economic progress.

The government’s minimum wage for the current Iranian calendar year ending in March 2027 is 166 million rials ($82). With government assistance and benefits, the figure comes to less than 220 million rials ($108). The situation underscores the severe consequences of sanctions and the devastating impact they have on Iran’s economy and the lives of its citizens.
