Libyan powerhouse Al-Swehly has completed the acquisition of Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo, a move that marks a significant step forward for the club and signals a new era of competition in Libya’s football landscape. The agreement, finalized on a three-year contract with an option for an additional year, places Sibo firmly within the Black Stars’ squad, providing a crucial boost to their aspirations both domestically and on the continent.

The Ghanaian, 28 years of age, officially joined Al-Swehly as a free agent following his departure from Spanish side Real Oviedo, which concluded its season at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Al-Swehly confirmed the transfer with a video showcasing the welcome of the Black Stars midfielder to the club, highlighting the excitement surrounding the new partnership. The club’s President, Ibrahim Al-Faris, stated that the move was a strategic decision aimed at strengthening the team’s competitive capabilities, particularly in the CAF Champions League, where they will face Zanzibar’s KVZ in the preliminary round.

Sibo’s arrival is being viewed as a pivotal moment for Al-Swehly, representing a substantial investment in bolstering their squad. Reports indicate the transfer fee is estimated to be around $10 million, with discussions suggesting a wider strategy to attract established African players to the Libyan league. The Black Stars midfielder’s extensive playing experience, including his impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to be invaluable to the team’s campaign. During the tournament, Sibo showcased his versatility by playing in all four of Ghana’s matches, achieving 249 minutes and starting the team’s goalless draw against England. He also featured in crucial matches against Panama, Croatia, and Colombia, demonstrating his ability to contribute significantly to the team’s overall performance.

Prior to joining Al-Swehly, Sibo spent his time at Real Oviedo, where he was a key part of their midfield. His expertise lies in controlling the tempo of the game, providing crucial passes, and defensively organizing the team. The club’s coaching staff have expressed confidence in his ability to adapt to the demands of Libyan football and to contribute significantly to Al-Swehly’s success. Al-Swehly’s tactical director, Ahmed Khalil, emphasized the importance of Sibo’s arrival, stating, ‘We are thrilled to welcome Kwasi to the club. His skills and experience will be a valuable asset as we continue to build our squad and compete for titles.’ The signing of Sibo represents a significant investment for Al-Swehly, solidifying their position as a prominent force in Libyan football.

The 2026 World Cup provided a valuable opportunity for Sibo to showcase his talents, and his performance there demonstrated his aptitude for high-pressure situations. His presence will undoubtedly add another dimension to Al-Swehly’s squad, signaling a new chapter for the club and potentially accelerating their ambitions in the domestic league. The club is keen to leverage Sibo’s experience and skills to achieve greater success in the coming years, securing a competitive edge against other Libyan teams.”
