The Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations (GHAFTRAM) has issued a critical and urgent advisory to its members, reinforcing a longstanding commitment to safeguarding the quality and safety of medicinal plants cultivated within areas significantly impacted by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. This decision stems from a growing concern regarding the potential contamination of these plants and the associated risks to traditional medicine practitioners and their clients. GHAFTRAM General Secretary, Okogyeabibiduro Nana Kwadwo Obiri, outlined this directive in an interview with Adom FM’s morning show, ‘Dwaso Nsem,’ emphasizing a concerning 40% reduction in previously cultivated areas designated as unsafe.

“Since the commencement of galamsey activities, a significant portion of the land where our members previously cultivated medicinal plants has been deemed unsuitable for continued cultivation,” Obiri stated. He explained that the Federation, recognizing the gravity of the situation, has implemented a precautionary measure to protect the integrity of these vital plant resources. “For now, we have advised our members to cease cultivating medicinal plants in these areas,” he clarified, acknowledging the significant scale of the problem. The Federation’s proactive stance reflects a deep understanding of the potential ramifications for traditional medicine and the broader well-being of the nation.

The impact of galamsey is not limited to the immediate vicinity; approximately 40 percent of the areas where our members once cultivated medicinal plants are currently considered unsafe, according to GHAFTRAM. This underscores the pervasive nature of the issue and necessitates immediate action. While some portions of the northern regions, including the North East, Oti, and Savannah areas, remain relatively shielded from the detrimental effects, the Federation has cautiously identified a select few areas where practitioners can continue to obtain high-quality medicinal plants. ‘It’s important to note that some parts of the north, Oti, and Savannah are better, and they still offer good quality plants,’ Obiri added, emphasizing the need for continued support from the Ghanaian public.

Furthermore, the GHAFTRAM Secretary emphasized the concerning involvement of foreign nationals in illegal mining operations, alleging a pattern of support by some Ghanaians. “We are deeply alarmed by the proliferation of foreign nationals involved in galamsey, and we believe this is a national security threat,” Obiri asserted. The Federation is urging the government and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining and protect areas utilized for the cultivation of medicinal plants. The Secretary-General called for a concerted national effort to eradicate galamsey and safeguard the integrity of these vital resources for generations to come, stressing the critical need to protect the health and well-being of the population.”

This situation highlights a complex challenge requiring a multifaceted approach. The GHAFTRAM’s advisory serves as a crucial reminder of the potential consequences of continued unchecked mining activities and underscores the importance of prioritizing sustainable development and environmental protection. The Federation is actively engaged in advocating for comprehensive measures to mitigate the risks associated with galamsey and safeguard the future of traditional medicine and the nation’s health.”
