The United States has announced a significant escalation in economic pressure on Iran, targeting nearly 60 entities and networks, marking a substantial shift in the US-Iran relationship. This move, intensified by a diplomatic deadlock during the war on Iran, reflects a broader strategy of isolating the country from the global economy. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the campaign is intended to ‘sever every economic lifeline’ sustaining Iran’s regime until Tehran stands alone, a starkly stated goal aimed at crippling Iran’s economy and undermining its political standing.

The US Department of the Treasury has imposed new sanctions on nearly 60 individuals and entities, focusing on networks supporting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, cyber operations, and oil revenue generation. The Treasury’s report details a complex web of interconnected entities, including companies involved in smuggling oil, procuring weapons, and engaging in cyber activities. The sanctions target a broad range of sectors including digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.

The sanctions are concentrated on five key areas: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The US Treasury Department has meticulously mapped these networks, identifying facilitators and financial channels Iran utilizes to evade sanctions. Crucially, the sanctions are targeting networks including BRE Line, a logistics firm facilitating shipments to Iran’s Organization of Defensive Research and Innovation, a key component of Iran’s nuclear program.

Here’s a breakdown of the entities targeted, categorized by their involvement: The US Treasury Department has specifically identified several entities, including Iranian government ministries like the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) and the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL), organizations linked to them, including logistics firms BRE Line, and shipping companies like Shipoil Ltd, which the US Treasury accused of facilitating shipments to the Organization of Defensive Research and Innovation. These companies are involved in a vast network of front companies, covert financial channels, and logistical intermediaries, all designed to circumvent US sanctions.

Beyond these direct targets, the sanctions encompass a diverse range of individuals. The US has sanctioned several key figures, including Mohammad Hossein Aslani, Reza Kadkhodai, and Arman Kahzadian, all of whom are accused of involvement in cyber activities. Notably, Shenzhen Sweet Ocean Technology Ltd was targeted, accused of facilitating payments for Iran’s ‘clandestine ‘shadow banking networks’ and providing services to the National Iranian Tanker Company. The Hong Kong-based company, Noavaran Axis Private Joint Stock Company (BRE Line), was sanctioned for facilitating shipments to Iran’s Organization of Defensive Research and Innovation, a key component of Iran’s nuclear program. The US also targeted several Chinese entities, including financial institutions suspected of aiding Iran’s oil trade, to prevent further flow of funds to Iran.

Furthermore, the US has also sanctioned several Singapore-registered entities, including those involved in the petroleum sector, as well as those operating in the UAE, for assisting with Iran’s oil trade.

The sanctions list includes several notable omissions from the initial list, including Chinese entities and the Sifra Shipping Co, which are accused of coordinating with sanctioned Iranian entities and providing bunkering services. The US has explicitly stated that the focus is on ‘cooperation between China and Iran’ and that they will not interfere with this relationship.

Iran has rejected the US sanctions, emphasizing its commitment to preserving unity. The government and President Masoud Pezeshkian will guide Iran through these developments, and the US is expected to give countries and companies time to adjust their business ties with Iran.

This move is particularly significant because China has been Iran’s largest oil buyer for several years, creating a substantial economic interdependence. The US is wary of provoking Chinese retaliation, given China’s firm opposition to unilateral sanctions, particularly given China’s critical role in supplying vital minerals to the US.

The US has also condemned Trump’s actions as criminal and coercive, warning that more and more countries understand that Iran is fighting for its ‘sovereignty and self-determination.’

DeZayas, a former UN special rapporteur and US lawyer, warned that Trump’s actions are likely to ‘boomerang’ because more and more countries understand that Iran is fighting for its ‘sovereignty and self-determination’.

China insisted that US sanctions will not resolve the conflict.

This escalation underscores the severity of the US’s resolve to limit Iran’s economic power, and it’s likely to have far-reaching consequences for the global energy market and geopolitical landscape.”
