Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has formally initiated a nationwide manhunt following the uploading of a video depicting the abduction of four villages in the remote Niger state last Friday. This development follows a series of escalating incidents, with local residents reporting a potential total of 500 abducted individuals. The incident has prompted a swift response from the government, and the President’s orders are the culmination of investigations into the kidnappers’ activities, which have been steadily increasing in recent months. The BBC Africa reports that the kidnappers, reportedly dressed in military-style clothing, posted the video on social media, showcasing the alleged abduction of individuals from the affected areas. Local youth leaders have confirmed the reports, stating that the videos have been circulating for several weeks, highlighting a significant shift in the criminal landscape within the region. The authorities, initially suspected of involvement in banditry and looting across Nigeria, have not yet confirmed the exact number of deaths, though estimates suggest over 40 people have perished, though the precise figure remains unconfirmed. The investigation into the video has revealed that the gunmen are believed to be affiliated with a network of criminal gangs involved in kidnapping and extortion across various parts of Nigeria. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that over 40 people were killed, though the exact number remains undisclosed. The footage released on social media reveals a pattern of coordinated attacks, with the gunmen reportedly targeting villages of Dekara, Gidan Zana, Sabon Gida, and Masaka. Police have indicated that the attackers planted improvised explosive devices in several communities as part of their operations, posing a significant threat to residents. A local blogger, speaking anonymously, stated that many residents fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring states or across the border into Benin, fearing for their safety. Several survivors are currently receiving medical treatment, with some suffering serious injuries. A local official, confirming the President’s condemnation, stated that the attacks are the latest escalation of insecurity in the Borgu region, which borders Kebbi and Kwara states, and also neighboring Benin. Earlier this month, police reported the rescue of 145 individuals from four other villages in the area, a figure that underscores the persistent threat to communities. A recent analysis by the Nigerian government indicates that the number of kidnappings has increased considerably in the past year, with a notable rise in incidents along the border region. The President’s statement released by the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, condemned the killings and abductions, emphasizing that those responsible will face justice. The President also expressed his condolences to the families of those killed, adding that the government is committed to bringing those responsible to account. The attack is part of a broader trend of escalating criminal activity in Nigeria, with police officials raising concerns about the growing presence of jihadist groups operating in northern Nigeria and along the border, indicating a potential influx of fighters into communities and a renewed imposition of religious restrictions.
