The crisis in Gary, Indiana, which had already escalated into a week-long struggle, culminated in a public confrontation between Freddie Gibbs and Gary, Indiana’s Power Response. During an appearance on the popular television program ‘All In with Chris Hayes,’ Gibbs, born and raised in Gary, expressed significant dissatisfaction with the city’s response to the August 11 storm, characterizing it as a failure of infrastructure and a reflection of a deeply ingrained societal issue. “This is an infrastructure problem Gary has,” she stated, describing the city’s electrical system as “archaic.” Gibbs further connected this systemic failure to Gary’s demographics, asserting that the city’s predominantly Black population tends to be ignored, exacerbating existing inequalities and contributing to a sense of neglect within the community.

The storm, which unleashed winds reaching 99 mph as severe weather moved through Northwest Indiana, inflicted widespread damage. Utility poles and transmission equipment were damaged across NIPSCO’s service area, resulting in over 38,000 homes and businesses losing electricity, with many residents remaining without power for nearly two weeks. Beyond the immediate outage, the storm caused significant economic hardship for Gary, impacting families, businesses, and healthcare providers. The consequences extended beyond darkness, with residents facing financial losses from lost refrigerated food, business closures, and medical equipment disruptions. Furthermore, the storm impacted Gary’s schools, which were closed for several days as the city worked to mitigate the damage.

Gibbs’ criticism came as NIPSCO faced mounting pressure regarding the pace of recovery compared to surrounding communities. The utility has repeatedly stated that Gary’s damage was the most complex from the storm and will require extensive rebuilding, including the replacement of hundreds of utility poles. NIPSCO set an August 25 deadline for substantially completing restoration work in Gary, though the company cautioned that individual customers could remain without service afterward. Indiana Governor Mike Braun subsequently called for an investigation into the utility’s storm preparedness and infrastructure spending, while Gary Mayor Eddie Melton repeatedly denounced the length of the outage as unacceptable. Gibbs’ involvement, occurring overseas shortly after the storm, placed him among several public figures who had stepped in to assist residents awaiting power restoration.

During an appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ Melton stated that Gibbs had contacted the city and offered to contribute to recovery efforts. While the exact amount remains undisclosed, Gibbs’ involvement was noted as a significant contribution. In response, Glenn Robinson, a Gary native, donated $100,000 for storm relief, with the money earmarked for direct assistance to residents. Another Gary native, Deniece Williams, provided meals to those affected by the outage, and social media personality Keith Lee offered $15,000 in supplies and a community giveaway with The Salvation Army. Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton matched Lee’s contribution, bringing their combined donation to $30,000. Thousands attended a public event on August 24, where residents received food and recovery supplies.

NIPSCO maintains that restoration times reflected the severity of the storm damage rather than the income or racial makeup of affected communities. Gibbs believes the blackout’s duration has only strengthened the argument that Gary’s problems did not begin when the winds arrived. “This isn’t a problem that started with the storm,” he asserted. The situation continues to be a significant challenge for Gary, with ongoing recovery efforts and ongoing discussions about the city’s long-term resilience.
