The United States and Canada are currently embroiled in a protracted trade war, with President Donald Trump intensifying his threat to impose tariffs on automobiles originating in Canada. Following a collapse in negotiations last week, each side is accusing the other of unreasonable demands, escalating a volatile situation that has already triggered a significant reduction in trade volume. Prime Minister Mark Carney has called Trump’s tariffs ‘unacceptable’ and accused the president of seeking to destroy Canada’s auto industry. Canada, however, is determined to resume negotiations if the US adopts a ‘right attitude’. The escalating tensions are fueled by several US and Canadian officials signaling a suspension of talks and a potential deadline for a new trade deal. Trump’s threat, the latest escalation following Canada’s withdrawal from negotiations late Friday, adds to the growing tension. The tariffs, specifically targeting nearly $20 billion in Canadian imports, represent a significant blow to Canadian businesses, particularly those in the auto manufacturing sector, according to industry analysts. The US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, stated that the tariffs are designed to ‘kiss my ass’ and will ‘dollar for dollar’ retaliate with similar levies on US goods. The US government has already introduced last-minute demands limiting which countries Canada can sign trade deals with. Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, responded to Trump’s threats by suggesting Canada should charge the US extra for oil and gas and electricity, adding that Canada will be ‘fighting back’. The breakdown in talks has led to public outcry, with both sides publicly accusing each other of obstruction. Trump’s latest tariff announcement followed a recent escalation, with Canada walking away from trade negotiations after a US-imposed deadline expiring before a 50% levy on nearly $20bn (C$28bn; £14bn) of Canadian imports. Canadian officials have indicated that the US introduced last-minute changes, including a clause limiting which countries Canada could sign trade deals with. The trade war has also raised concerns about the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), which is currently under review by both Canada and Mexico, with both sides seeking to extend it for another 16 years. Data from Canadian government sources indicates that the US accounts for 60% of total US crude oil imports and close to 100% of US natural gas exports. Experts with Oxford Economics warn that a dismantling of the USMCA could have dire economic consequences for Canada, potentially plunging the country into recession. The potential for further escalation has increased, with the risk of the USMCA unravelling becoming more prominent, which could significantly impact Canada’s economic trajectory.
