The United States is preparing to unveil a significant and unprecedented series of economic sanctions targeting Iran, dubbed the ‘Economic D-Day,’ following a stark warning from President Donald Trump in a Financial Times op-ed. Trump has repeatedly stated that an ‘economic D-Day’ is coming for Iran, echoing his previous threats of reciprocal measures against countries doing business with Tehran. The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, announced this week that a news conference will detail the planned sanctions, with the stated goal of crippling Iran’s economy and halting its nuclear program. This announcement comes amidst growing differences within Iran’s leadership regarding the conflict with the US, with President Masoud Pezeshkian expressing a ‘cannot continue with war forever’ sentiment, while others have largely rejected dialogue.

This escalation follows a complex geopolitical landscape, particularly concerning China’s substantial role in Iran’s oil exports – roughly 90% of its crude imports. While China doesn’t publicly acknowledge importing Iranian crude, recent reports suggest it’s largely operating under a non-commercial, albeit indirect, trade agreement with Iran, which has been increasingly scrutinized.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping lane, is now under heightened risk. US shipping traffic has remained low, raising concerns about disruptions to international commerce, and the US Treasury Department has sanctioned independent Chinese refineries that have been importing Iranian crude, but Beijing has reportedly ignored these restrictions. The situation is further complicated by recent Iranian statements indicating a potential shift in strategy, with some officials suggesting Tehran should now engage in negotiations from a position of strength before its economic crisis worsens, while hardliners in the security apparatus continue to reject dialogue.

Meanwhile, in Iran, officials’ responses to the US pressure are revealing a degree of internal divergence within the leadership. Iran’s state-controlled Iranian Press TV reported on Sunday that officials’ responses to the threats from the US appear to show some differences within its leadership over how to proceed with the war, with some suggesting Tehran should now negotiate from a position of strength before its economic crisis worsens.

CNN’s reporting highlights the impact of the US sanctions on the global economy, with gas prices remaining high and a Federal Reserve official predicting the US inflation target may remain out of reach until the war ends. The US Treasury Department has sanctioned independent Chinese refineries that have been importing Iranian crude, but Beijing has ordered its companies to ignore those restrictions. A recent report by the US Congress commissioned a fact sheet by a US Congress commission reveals that the US Treasury Department has sanctioned independent Chinese refineries that have been importing Iranian crude, but in May, Beijing ordered its companies to ignore those restrictions.

In a series of posts on X, Iran’s state-controlled Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has warned that vessels accused of violating its transit rules in the Strait of Hormuz could face penalties including detention or confiscation, signaling potential risks for shipping through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. The authority urged cargo owners shipping to or from the Persian Gulf to review what it called a ‘Non-Compliant Vessels’ list before chartering ships in order to avoid potential issues.

Analysts suggest the situation is increasingly fraught, with growing debate within Iran regarding the optimal course of action, with some arguing for a return to full-scale classic colonialism and others warning of a potential for severe repercussions, particularly if the conflict escalates. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has warned that those who order or implement the levies ‘will not submit’ to the US, Iranian semi-official media reported on Saturday. The Iranian President has also frequently warned of the economic and social consequences of the conflict, and Taeb stated Trump’s current rhetoric stems from ‘desperation’ as he vowed Tehran ‘will not submit’ to the US, Iranian semi-official media reported on Saturday.
