Accra and Kumasi, Ghana – The relentless flow of commercial vehicles along the Pokuasi-Amasaman road, a vital artery connecting the two metropolitan areas, is facing a growing crisis – the lack of functioning street lights. A growing number of drivers are now voicing their concerns, appealing to the authorities to address the deteriorating conditions that are demonstrably contributing to a surge in accidents. This escalating concern stems from a significant and increasingly dangerous reality: inadequate lighting along the route, particularly during nighttime hours and early morning commutes, poses a serious threat to the safety of all road users. The drivers, representing a significant portion of the traffic volume on this stretch, are demanding immediate action.

“Travelling at night and in the early hours of the morning has become increasingly dangerous due to poor visibility caused by the lack of functioning street lights,” explained one driver, Samuel Agyamekwa, speaking to Adom News. “It’s incredibly difficult to see pedestrians, other vehicles, or even obstacles on the road, especially when visibility is low. This lack of illumination creates a perilous situation for everyone.”

The drivers’ narrative is echoed by numerous other individuals interviewed, highlighting the pervasive issue. They repeatedly emphasize that a lack of adequate lighting is a primary contributing factor to the escalating number of accidents. They report a pattern of near misses and, tragically, actual collisions. Several documented incidents, though not definitively linked to a single cause, have occurred along this stretch, further fueling the urgency of the situation.

The drivers are not simply complaining; they are actively advocating for a solution. They are acutely aware of the risks involved and are understandably frustrated by the apparent lack of prioritization from road authorities. “We’ve been warning about this for years,” stated another driver, Rita Nkrumah, “But nothing seems to be happening. It’s a constant battle against the elements, and it’s affecting our livelihoods and, more importantly, our safety.”

The drivers insist that the repair or installation of new street lights is not merely a matter of convenience, but a critical necessity for road safety. They believe improved lighting will significantly enhance visibility, dramatically reducing the risk of accidents, particularly during the darker hours. “We’re talking about saving lives,” Agyamekwa asserted. “Every missed opportunity, every delayed reaction, can have devastating consequences.”

They are pushing for a swift response, urging the relevant authorities to prioritize this issue. The lack of consistent maintenance and repair of street lights on this particular stretch of road is a major impediment to traffic flow and safety. The drivers are demanding a concrete plan of action, including a detailed timeline for the necessary repairs or installations. They are particularly concerned that the current situation will only worsen if left unaddressed. The economic impact of these accidents is also a significant concern, with potential implications for businesses and commuters alike. The drivers are hoping for a tangible demonstration of commitment to improving road safety on this vital route, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action to mitigate the risks and safeguard the lives of all road users.”

This situation underscores the critical role that street lighting plays in the safety of road users, particularly during the often-challenging conditions of nighttime and early morning travel. The persistent complaints and demands from the drivers highlight a growing public safety concern that demands immediate attention from the authorities. The lack of sufficient illumination represents a significant hazard that must be addressed to prevent further tragedies.
