The Ghana Ministry of Education, led by Minister Haruna Iddrisu, has formally inaugurated Prof. Christian Agyare as the Chair of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)’s Technology and Consultancy Centre, following a meeting in Accra during which the Minister commended the Vice Chancellor’s appointment and wished him success.
This significant development comes amidst a broader commitment from the government to bolster KNUST’s technological capabilities, as outlined by Minister Iddrisu. The Minister stressed that the Ministry is providing crucial financial support through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) towards the completion of the University’s Teaching Hospital, a project anticipated to significantly enhance the quality of teaching and learning, particularly within health-related disciplines.
Furthermore, the Minister underscored the importance of STEM education, stating that KNUST must prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields to meet the evolving demands of the Ghanaian economy. He urged the University to increase its investment in these areas, specifically through increased laboratory equipment and re-equipping existing facilities. Specifically, Minister Iddrisu stated that the Ministry is committed to increasing funding for research and development in areas like Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, highlighting the need for KNUST to proactively adapt to future industry trends.
Professor Agyare assured the Ministry that KNUST was actively undertaking measures to enhance its focus on these areas, including directing increased resources towards re-equipment and retooling laboratories. He also emphasized the University’s engagement with hostel owners to explore strategies for improving student accommodation, acknowledging the current challenges in providing affordable housing for students.
In response to questions regarding the investigation into alleged assassination attempts targeting former Minister of Interior, Asante Akyem Central residents expressed their admiration for the former MCE’s AstroTurf project, highlighting its positive impact on the community. Minister Iddrisu stated that the Ministry is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all personnel and that the investigation will continue with utmost diligence and transparency.
The Minister also detailed the Ministry’s plans for strengthening stakeholder engagement, emphasizing the crucial role collaboration will play in advancing the University’s academic, research, and development objectives. The Ministry’s commitment to supporting KNUST’s growth is evident in its continued investment in education and technology.
