Lawyer and New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Kwasi Kwarteng has initiated a critical inquiry regarding the recent decision by the National Chairman hopeful Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to select nomination forms on his behalf while he remains incarcerated. According to Mr. Kwarteng, the immediate priority for Wontumi’s campaign team should be securing his freedom, rather than engaging in the contentious NPP National Chairmanship race. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kwarteng expressed serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Wontumi’s incarceration, raising questions about the rationale behind prioritizing nomination forms over his personal freedom. He questioned whether the selection of these forms was based on a pre-existing precedent allowing individuals in his current situation to navigate the party’s vetting process, particularly if such participation would necessitate special intervention. “Even if your government were in power, precedent will not allow it because who are you writing a letter to allow you to go for a vetting?” he questioned, emphasizing that Wontumi’s supporters should concentrate on lawful means of securing his bail. Mr. Kwarteng further detailed that Wontumi’s primary concern is regaining his freedom, arguing that his priority now is not chairmanship but rather gaining his release. He asserted that Wontumi’s supporters should avoid focusing on the NPP chairmanship contest, warning that attempts to push ahead with the political contest could potentially jeopardize the pending bail application.
