The Ghana government has commenced a significant and multifaceted initiative to reclaim the Lafa water retention basin at Mallam, part of a wider strategy to mitigate the escalating challenges posed by flooding across Accra and its surrounding communities. This operation, spearheaded by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, represents a pivotal step in bolstering the city’s resilience to increasingly frequent and severe weather events.

The Lafa water retention basin, historically vital for managing rainwater runoff, has suffered years of accumulated solid waste, silt, and illicit construction, dramatically reducing its capacity to absorb excess water. This deterioration has demonstrably exacerbated the frequency and severity of flooding in Mallam, Weija, Dansoman, and the wider Greater Accra region. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the 48 Engineer Regiment, a specialized combat engineer unit stationed in Teshie, Accra, has been tasked with a comprehensive remediation project.

The regiment’s mission, detailed in a recent statement from the Presidency, encompasses a range of crucial activities. Firstly, the team is undertaking a meticulous dredging operation, involving the removal of accumulated sediment and debris from the basin’s depths. This dredging process is expected to significantly increase the basin’s water retention capacity, acting as a crucial buffer against future flooding.

In addition to dredging, a significant element of the operation focuses on the evacuation of substantial amounts of accumulated waste. This includes the dismantling and removal of illegal structures and encroachments that have been established within the basin’s perimeter, hindering its functionality.

Furthermore, the government has allocated substantial resources and equipment to support this endeavor. Specifically, the deployment of dredging equipment, including excavators, barges, and specialized sediment removal tools, is underway. This equipment is complemented by the necessary expertise to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force, a collaborative effort between various governmental agencies and local organizations. This coordinated effort, alongside similar projects underway at Oyarifa, East Legon, and the Kpeshie Lagoon area, represents a broader national strategy to restore waterways and drainage channels across Accra following the devastating floods of June 29, 2026.

The focus is not merely to restore functionality, but also to prevent future damage. The 48 Engineer Regiment’s efforts are directly linked to the ongoing efforts at Oyarifa, East Legon, and Kpeshie Lagoon, aiming to implement a similar, albeit larger-scale, intervention to address the underlying issues contributing to the increased risk of flooding.

The public is being explicitly urged to cooperate with the taskforce and to actively desist from any activities that obstruct waterways, impede flood mitigation efforts, or compromise the integrity of the basin’s drainage system. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining a cooperative relationship with the taskforce and are assuring the public that the government is committed to a swift and effective response to this critical situation.

This operation highlights the government’s proactive approach to disaster preparedness and its dedication to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of the Accra region’s citizens. The long-term success of this project will be crucial in reducing the frequency and intensity of flooding incidents and ensuring a more stable and resilient urban environment.
