The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has emphasized the government’s intensified focus on addressing illegal immigration, migrant begging, and other unlawful activities within Ghana, particularly since 2025. According to the Minister, the government has significantly increased efforts to combat these issues, resulting in the removal of a total of 2,281 migrant beggars and 774 other illegal immigrants during the period. By the end of 2025, the Ministry successfully removed 960 migrant beggars and 186 other illegal immigrants. Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak stated that Ghana’s reputation as a stable and peaceful country continues to attract individuals seeking refuge from security and economic challenges, particularly from countries experiencing difficulties in the subregion. He acknowledged the growing presence of beggars and illegal immigrants, stressing the importance of protecting borders and safeguarding national security and public order. The Minister underscored the government’s commitment to obligations under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons while simultaneously prioritizing border security and upholding national law. He explained that the government’s actions are being carried out with due consideration for Ghana’s regional and international obligations, including diplomatic relations. The Minister stressed that the objective isn’t simply to remove migrants, but to reduce irregular migration and unlawful activities, ensuring enforcement remains lawful and respects human dignity. Specifically, the government is committed to reducing irregular migration and unlawful activities associated with it to the barest minimum, while maintaining strict adherence to established legal frameworks. He further assured the public that the government possesses the political will and resources to scale up these removals and bolster border security. Logistical support has been earmarked to increase the scale of removals and strengthen Ghana’s borders, with a clear plan for evidence of such increases.
