Ghana has announced a significant achievement in the fight against drug trafficking, seizing over 8,500 kilograms of narcotic drugs and intercepting approximately 45.4 million tramadol tablets over the past 20 months. This represents a substantial increase in the country’s efforts to combat substance abuse and disrupt the illegal drug trade, driven by heightened concerns regarding the increasing use of synthetic drugs among young people. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), a key regulatory body responsible for overseeing drug control within the nation.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, revealed the seizure during a Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, 2026, stating that the operations, intensified following the increasing prevalence of synthetic drug use among young individuals, had resulted in 217 arrests and 165 prosecutions. Mr. Muntaka emphasized that the sheer volume of seized narcotics – exceeding 45 million tablets in less than two years – underscores the seriousness of the problem.

The seizures are part of a broader strategy aimed at disrupting the entire drug trade network, with a particular focus on the illicit production and distribution of synthetic drugs. NACOC has deployed enhanced operations across the country, targeting key trafficking routes and facilitating the dismantling of organized criminal groups. The Minister highlighted that the recovery of 73 assets, including significant gold reserves, further demonstrates the government’s commitment to combating the financial dimensions of drug trafficking.

Beyond the seizure of narcotics, the government is actively pursuing financial networks and assets linked to suspected drug traffickers. A significant portion of the seized contraband – approximately 19 kilograms of gold – was recovered as part of these efforts, indicating a deliberate attempt to monetize the illicit drug trade. Furthermore, authorities have placed strict restrictions on approximately GH¢6.9 million and US$440,000 in cash believed to be connected to illicit drug activities, a move designed to curtail illicit financial flows.

The Minister stressed the crucial role of public education and awareness campaigns in preventing substance abuse, outlining a comprehensive program involving over 2,000 educational sessions nationwide. These programs span across diverse educational institutions, including schools, tertiary educational institutions, religious organizations, communities, and workplaces. The Minister expressed concern about the current lack of a dedicated state-owned rehabilitation center for substance use disorders, highlighting the urgent need for strengthened institutional support for individuals struggling with addiction.

Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued a call for articles on Ghana’s restorative justice agenda, emphasizing the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of substance abuse and ensuring accountability for those involved in criminal activities. The government is undertaking a review of its justice system, with a focus on restorative justice principles, aiming to provide more meaningful opportunities for victims and reintegrate offenders back into society.

This incident at Assin Fosu, where an immigration officer was killed and a police officer critically injured in a car crash, has prompted the Foreign Affairs Ministry to advocate for articles addressing Ghana’s restorative justice agenda. The Ministry is exploring the implementation of restorative justice practices to address the complex issues surrounding substance abuse and ensure that individuals are held accountable for their actions while offering opportunities for reconciliation and rehabilitation. The focus is on providing victims with a platform to express their grievances and facilitate dialogue between those involved and the community.
