The NDC’s 2024 campaign promises remain largely unfulfilled, according to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has voiced significant criticism of the governing government’s performance ahead of the general election. Speaking on JoyNews’ ‘The Probe’ on Sunday, August 23, Mr. Markin asserted that the government has failed to deliver on several key commitments made during the campaign, marking a significant departure from the promises it made to Ghanaians.
Mr. Markin stated, ‘So far, the key promises they made to Ghanaians, there are no tangible achievements that you can see that these are the visible ones.’ He highlighted the 24-Hour Economy policy and the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, arguing that they had not materialized as promised during the campaign. The NDC’s proposed 24-Hour Economy, a policy he described as a major intervention aimed at creating jobs and stimulating economic activity through a three-shift system, has been criticized as a failure to generate the necessary employment opportunities.
He further questioned the government’s response to the 24-Hour Economy, claiming that the implementation has been insufficient. Mr. Markin pointed to the fact that the government has not created the conditions necessary for the private sector to generate the jobs envisioned under the policy. ‘You and I know that as we speak, the government has not created an opportunity for private sector growth, which will lead to one job, three shifts. The one job, three shifts, straight away failed,’ he asserted. This contradicts the NDC’s promise of creating a significant number of jobs through the policy.
In contrast to the NDC’s record, the Minority Leader contrasted the government’s performance with the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Mr. Markin noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaigned on Free SHS ahead of the 2016 election and initiated the policy in September 2017, months after assuming office. According to Mr. Markin, the Akufo-Addo administration demonstrated its commitment to a major campaign pledge by beginning implementation within its first year in office. ‘When Akufo-Addo came into office, he said Free SHS; immediately, immediately, one can see that he announced the policy, the Finance Minister came to Parliament, and Free SHS has started, and everybody could attest to it; however, the criticism has started.’
Mr. Markin maintained that the same urgency had not been demonstrated by the Mahama administration in delivering some of the NDC’s flagship campaign promises. He expressed concern that the NDC is failing to meet its commitments and is not delivering on the promises that resonated with voters during the 2024 election.”
Mr. Markin further emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency, suggesting that the NDC’s track record warrants a thorough review and assessment of its performance. This perspective underscores the growing public dissatisfaction with the current government’s actions and the NDC’s perceived failure to deliver on its campaign promises.
