Manchester United have finalized a landmark transfer agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion, securing a fee of up to £70 million for young midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The two clubs reached a significant agreement this Friday evening, effectively freeing Baleba to complete his medical with the United squad this weekend, marking a pivotal moment in the transfer landscape.
United’s midfield strategy has been bolstered following the departures of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The club has agreed to a deal that includes an initial £65 million plus a potential £5 million in add-ons, while Brighton has negotiated a sell-on clause.
Baleba, who joined Brighton from Lille in 2023, is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during pre-season training camp in Austria. The deal is expected to push United’s summer spending to a maximum of £153 million, representing a significant saving compared to the initial demands made by Brighton.
The transfer concludes United’s attempts to strengthen their midfield following the departure of veteran Brazilian Casemiro, who completed his contract at the end of the season. While Manuel Ugarte was initially expected to leave, he suffered a serious knee injury during Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.
Furthermore, England international Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be available for the Saturday lunchtime Premier League match against Hull City.
Experts suggest Baleba’s arrival will provide additional athleticism to the United team, and his eagerness to move north likely expedited the transfer process.
The agreement is expected to have a substantial impact on United’s squad depth, with the club now facing a crucial selection process to determine the roles of left-back Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui, who are both currently serving as left-back.
It remains to be seen whether United will continue to seek a left-back to challenge Luke Shaw, or whether Baleba, a left-footed player with a proven record in that position, can provide the cover needed by coach Michael Carrick.
