Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) has initiated a comprehensive fumigation and disinfection exercise across the Western Region, strategically designed to mitigate potential outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and malaria following the recent flooding. This initiative, a cornerstone of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, represents a vital response to public health threats emerging from the affected communities and infrastructure. The exercise, commencing simultaneously in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STMA) and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality (EKMA), is expected to encompass all 14 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) within the region.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the exercise in Takoradi, Western Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Patrick Akorful, emphasized the urgency and scope of the endeavor. He stated, “We ask the public to welcome our teams as they move through communities and facilities. This is a free emergency service, and our sole aim is to safeguard public health.” The exercise targets stagnant water bodies and other public spaces that could serve as breeding grounds for disease-carrying organisms following the significant flooding.
The exercise began with the simultaneous deployment of teams across STMA and EKMA, demonstrating a widespread commitment to addressing the immediate health risks. Residents in affected communities have expressed gratitude for the intervention, highlighting the comfort and reassurance it provides. Grace Mensah, a resident of Kwesimintsim, remarked, “Seeing the Zoomlion team spray around us brings great comfort. We truly appreciate this swift intervention.” Local authorities and environmental health officials have also lauded the initiative, acknowledging its critical role in bolstering regional preventive health measures.
Local authorities and environmental health officials have commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the timely and proactive response, particularly in complementing the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly’s ongoing environmental sanitation efforts. Assembly Member for Cassava Farm, Abraham Rex Kotobebi, highlighted the significance of the intervention, stating, “Zoomlion Ghana Limited has demonstrated a crucial commitment to public safety. It complements the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly’s existing environmental sanitation efforts, significantly strengthening our region’s preventive health measures.” Furthermore, the exercise is being viewed as a crucial step in strengthening the region’s overall preparedness for disease control, aligning with government’s initiatives to address the fallout from the recent flooding.
The exercise is part of a larger, ongoing effort to assess and mitigate the impact of the floods on public health. Government has already begun negotiations with VALCO, a strategic partnership aimed at securing long-term economic benefits for the region. Additionally, the government has provided Adamus Resources with a 12-month turnaround plan to address critical operational challenges. The exercise underscores Zoomlion’s dedication to supporting the recovery and well-being of the affected communities, reflecting a commitment to public health and safety in the face of significant environmental challenges.
