The Technical Universities Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has suspended its ongoing industrial action and directed members to resume work following renewed engagements with the government and other stakeholders. The suspension takes immediate effect as discussions continue over the outstanding issues that led to the strike. This decision follows commitments by key stakeholders to reopen negotiations and work towards resolving the concerns within an agreed timeframe. TUSAAG, representing a significant portion of technical university faculty and administrators across Ghana, embarked on the strike over the government’s failure to pay a promised one-time research allowance and fully implement a negotiated interim allowance agreement.

In a joint statement with the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), TUSAAG asserted that the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Vice Chancellors Ghana and the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities Ghana had agreed to renewed and time-bound engagements. This agreement, reached following months of intense negotiations, emphasizes the urgency of addressing the core issues driving the strike. The association, however, stressed that the suspension is temporary and will depend on tangible progress in resolving the outstanding concerns. The association warned that it could resume the strike without further notice if the ongoing engagements, particularly those involving the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), fail to yield satisfactory results within a reasonable period.

TUSAAG clarified that the suspension was a deliberate decision taken in good faith and to allow dialogue to resolve the dispute. The association expressed gratitude to its members for their solidarity and discipline throughout the strike and emphasized appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding. This protracted period of unrest has deeply impacted the academic calendar, with planned examinations and research projects now facing potential disruption. The strike, which began on [Insert Date Here – Research Required], has affected numerous universities across Ghana, leading to significant logistical challenges for both students and faculty. The government’s failure to meet its obligations, particularly regarding research funding, has been a central point of contention for TUSAAG, which argues that these funds are crucial for maintaining the quality of education and research within the technical university sector. The association’s demands include a concrete timeline for the research allowance payment and a commitment to a legally binding interim allowance agreement, which they believe is currently unmet.

Specifically, the issue of the research allowance, a significant portion of the university’s budget, has been a focal point of negotiations. The government initially promised a one-time payment, but the agreement lacked clear stipulations regarding the disbursement and timing. The GTEC, in its own statement, reiterated its commitment to engaging with TUSAAG and facilitating a swift resolution, but the lack of a concrete plan for the research allowance remains a major obstacle. TUSAAG’s legal counsel has advised that further negotiations are required before any resumption of industrial action, emphasizing the need for a clear and measurable path forward to mitigate potential disruption to academic activities. The association is actively seeking mediation and alternative solutions to reach a mutually acceptable agreement, though the current impasse highlights a significant challenge for Ghana’s technical education landscape.”

This situation has resulted in a ripple effect across the academic calendar, with numerous courses and programs facing potential delays and disruptions. The association has stated its intention to re-engage in discussions with all stakeholders, including the government, GTEC, and other relevant bodies, to explore potential compromises and find a solution to the underlying issues. The long-term impact on Ghana’s technical education system remains uncertain, and the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of the negotiations.
