The Tanoso Traditional Council in the Ahafo Region has initiated a significant initiative to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, within the area, demonstrating a strong commitment to safeguarding the community’s vital water resources. The council’s funding of several anti-galamsey operations is a direct response to increasing pollution detected in the rivers surrounding Ankobea, a key watershed area for the region. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Ankobeahene, Nana Okofo Dartey Amoako Atta, emphasized the urgency of this task, stating that the traditional authority has been compelled to finance these operations due to the escalating environmental hazards posed by illegal mining. He explained that the council’s initial decision stemmed from observations of significant river pollution, prompting a collaborative effort to address the problem. The chief subsequently convened a meeting with the youth chairman and unit committee members to develop a comprehensive strategy. The council has documented instances of suspected illegal miners receiving information about police patrols, a tactic which they believe facilitates their escape, highlighting a significant challenge to law enforcement efforts. As a first step, the council initiated the investigation of several suspected sites, leading to the arrest and seizure of six individuals and several mining equipment, including pumping machines and shovels. Nana Okofo Dartey Amoako Atta reported that the council’s initial financial outlay of GH¢20,000 was allocated to the operation, with the purpose being to identify and confront the activities of these individuals. He further disclosed that three suspects were granted bail while the remaining three were arraigned before court, demonstrating a sustained commitment to prosecution. The traditional council has also taken on the financial responsibility for prosecution of the case since January, with the court proceedings currently proceeding slowly. The council insists that protecting the community’s rivers and environment remains paramount, despite the slow progress of legal proceedings. Nana Amoako Atta underscored the importance of stronger state support to ensure successful prosecutions and to achieve meaningful results in combating galamsey. The traditional council is appealing for increased investment from state institutions to facilitate arrests and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, safeguarding the long-term health of the region’s water resources.” , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
