Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has signaled a renewed commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with Iraq, amidst growing concerns about U.S. sanctions and a perceived shift in geopolitical strategy. Ghalibaf’s remarks, delivered at the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad, highlighted the two countries’ desire to mitigate the impact of U.S. economic pressure and diversify trade relationships.

His statement underscored a deliberate effort to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar and explore mechanisms for trade through Iranian national currencies, a move mirroring broader discussions within Iran’s government regarding the potential for utilizing alternative financial systems. Ghalibaf emphasized the crucial role of economic strength in securing national security, framing it as a complementary element to security concerns.

The U.S. and Israel, according to recent reports, have increasingly emphasized ‘cognitive and economic warfare’ as a strategic response to Iran, citing a desire to overcome the two countries through conventional military action. Vice President JD Vance has stated that the U.S. is actively pursuing a coordinated campaign against Iran, aiming to isolate its economy through economic pressure. This initiative, dubbed ‘Economic Warfare and Isolation,’ has prompted both allies and rivals to join the effort, including China, which has expressed concerns about the potential for a prolonged conflict.

The Iranian trade office, on Friday, announced a revised bilateral agreement with Oman, a move seen as a strategic step to reinvigorate trade relations with regional partners. This agreement, which remains subject to parliamentary approval, represents a significant effort to expand Iran’s economic footprint across the Middle East and North Africa. The agreement, reportedly involving fees for commercial ships utilizing the Strait of Hormuz, has drawn condemnation from the White House, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasizing the importance of both allies and rivals in joining the campaign.

Meanwhile, Oman has discussed joint control of the Strait of Hormuz with Iran for several weeks, resulting in a contentious Israeli settlement project near Jerusalem. The project, intended to effectively cut the West Bank in two, has been criticized by Palestinian groups, who argue it will exacerbate the Israeli occupation and hinder the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state. The EU, along with Canada, condemned the project, asserting that Israeli actions are illegal and that the settlement’s ongoing violence against civilians constitutes a violation of international law.

The U.S. has also announced plans to increase economic pressure on Iran, with President Trump warning of ‘economic D-Day’ and threatening to wield ‘Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.’ Iran has dismissed these threats, asserting that it would backfire. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier, deployed to the Middle East, has been undergoing a nine-month deployment, with concerns raised about mental health and sanitary conditions aboard the ship. The ship’s voyage is expected to continue for several weeks, with the U.S. government assessing its potential impact on the overall maritime environment.

Further complicating the situation is the ongoing conflict in Yemen, where tensions are escalating, with reports of increased violence by Houthi rebels against Saudi-led forces. The U.S. has condemned the conflict and is seeking a diplomatic solution, while the Saudi-led coalition continues its military campaign.

The situation is also shaping up in Israel, with the Ministry of Construction and Housing announcing the construction of several new compounds with over 1,200 homes in the open area of land east of Jerusalem. This move has triggered condemnation from Palestinian groups, who accuse Israeli settlers of violence against Palestinians.

Experts suggest that the Iranian government is seeking to diversify its trade relationships and reduce its reliance on the U.S., viewing the shift in U.S. policy as a strategic challenge.

The situation is also impacting global markets, with investors closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and the broader geopolitical landscape. The Biden administration has announced a strategy to limit Iran’s access to technology, further complicating the situation. The next steps in the conflict, and the broader implications for global trade and security, remain uncertain.
