The Global Mercy, a world-leading civilian hospital ship, officially arrived at the Port of Tema, Ghana, marking the commencement of a ten-month medical mission designed to provide free surgeries and dental treatment to thousands of Ghanaians. This represents the fifth field service by Mercy Ships in Ghana, a partnership that stretches back over three decades, highlighting the enduring commitment to supporting healthcare in the region.

The arrival was enthusiastically welcomed by government officials, diplomats, healthcare professionals, and international volunteer crew members, symbolizing a vital partnership between Ghana and Mercy Ships. The mission’s initial focus is a substantial undertaking, with an anticipated total of 1,950 to 2,600 free surgeries and 1,610 to 2,145 free dental treatments. This significant volume underscores the scale of the initiative.

Volunteer medical teams, comprising between 100 and 250 professionals, will be actively engaged throughout the duration of the mission. Specifically, the program will encompass a range of crucial activities, including meticulous surgical procedures, diagnostic testing, and comprehensive dental care. The HOPE Center, a key component of the program, will provide essential support to patients before and after surgery, fostering opportunities for Ghanaian healthcare professionals to collaborate with international medical volunteers.

Mercy Ships CEO, Dr. Michelle White, emphasized the mission’s dual significance, moving beyond simple humanitarian intervention to a strategic partnership focused on bolstering Ghana’s healthcare priorities. She noted that the long-term impact will be measured not solely by the number of surgeries performed, but also by the tangible improvements in patient health, healthcare professional well-being, and the overall health of Ghana’s local communities.

The organization’s extensive history, spanning over four decades, began with a single ship, Anastasis, which docked in the port of Tema in 1991. Since then, Mercy Ships has trained nearly 3,000 Ghanaian healthcare professionals and performed over 2,500 surgical procedures in Ghana. The initiative has expanded considerably, transitioning from emergency humanitarian interventions to long-term system strengthening through training, partnerships, and locally-led capacity development.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, lauded the Global Mercy’s visit, assuring the crew of full government support for the mission’s success. He stated that the port of Tema serves as a critical gateway to the wider West African sub-region, and wished the medical team a productive and successful stay. The vessel’s significant contribution to global healthcare is documented with 47 field services completed across 14 African countries, delivering over 128,800 surgical procedures worldwide. Mercy Ships has consistently expanded its scope, shifting focus towards long-term healthcare system strengthening and leveraging partnerships to enhance healthcare access across the continent.

Furthermore, the organization plans to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Health, universities, and professional institutions, including the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Ghana College of Nursing and Midwifery, to establish postgraduate training opportunities aboard the Global Mercy. This collaboration represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare in Ghana.
