The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to bolstering breast cancer awareness, early detection, and comprehensive support for women impacted by the disease across Ghana. This commitment was publicly expressed by Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey during a visit to the Breast Society of Ghana, led by its Chairperson, Madam Enam Setsoafia, who paid a courtesy call to her office. The delegation, representing the Society’s vital work, underscored the escalating burden of breast cancer in Ghana, emphasizing the critical need for sustained and intensified public education campaigns.

Madam Setsoafia detailed the significant challenge posed by the growing prevalence of breast cancer in the nation, stressing the imperative for proactive measures to safeguard lives. She articulated the crucial role of regular screening and early diagnosis in mitigating the impact of the disease, highlighting the potential for significant savings when implemented effectively. The Society’s dedication extends beyond simply raising awareness; it encompasses a range of public engagement initiatives, including extensive community outreach programs, screening exercises, advocacy efforts, and dedicated support services for those affected by breast cancer.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection underscored the critical importance of empowering women with accurate and accessible information, directly addressing the core of the issue. She explicitly stated that increased awareness and timely access to screening and treatment are paramount in reducing preventable deaths. Furthermore, the Ministry will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders – including health institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners – to expand breast cancer education and support initiatives throughout the country. This commitment is a strategic priority for the Ministry, which has historically incorporated breast cancer awareness into its community outreach activities, including sensitization campaigns and screening exercises targeting market women, female inmates, schoolchildren, and staff.

The Ministry also detailed its past efforts in this area, noting that breast cancer awareness has been integrated into its outreach initiatives over many years. These activities will continue as part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to promote preventive healthcare and early detection, acknowledging the significance of proactive measures in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of women and girls across Ghana. The delegation commended the Society’s sustained efforts to improve breast health outcomes through education, advocacy, and screening. Dr. Naa Momo Lartey emphasized the Ministry’s determination to ensure the continued availability of qualified healthcare professionals, expanded educational resources, and accessible support systems to address this critical public health concern.

The Breast Society of Ghana’s dedication to the community is a vital component of Ghana’s overall healthcare strategy. The Minister reiterated the need for sustained collaboration and resources to ensure a robust and effective response to this significant public health challenge. The delegation expressed confidence in the Ministry’s commitment to continued progress in reducing preventable deaths associated with breast cancer, solidifying the collaborative partnership between government and the Society in this vital endeavor.”

“The impact of breast cancer on women’s lives is profound, and proactive strategies are essential to mitigate the risks associated with this disease. The Ministry’s continued investment in education, screening, and support represents a crucial step towards a healthier future for Ghana’s women and girls,” stated Dr. Naa Momo Lartey, concluding her remarks. The Ministry plans to refine its strategies to maximize the impact of these efforts, ensuring that women and girls in Ghana have access to the information, resources, and support they need to protect their health.”

“This collaborative effort will undoubtedly contribute to a significant reduction in the incidence of breast cancer in Ghana, ensuring that women have the opportunity to live full and healthy lives,” added the Minister. The Ministry’s commitment to this critical issue underscores its dedication to the wellbeing of the nation’s population.”
