The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center has reported a significant security incident involving the seizure of a tanker off the coast of Yemen, a development that has raised concerns about escalating piracy activity in the region. According to UKMTO, on Thursday, it received a report of an incident 136 nautical miles (252km) east of Yemen’s Al Mukalla, where the Seamull tanker, also known as SIBU 1, broadcast a distress call that it was approaching by an unauthorized vessel while traveling westwards in the Gulf of Aden. The incident involved six armed individuals who seized control of the vessel and redirected it towards Somalia, triggering a heightened security alert.

UKMTO stated that it had confirmed that the tanker has been boarded by six armed persons who are now in control of the vessel and redirecting to Somalia, indicating a significant escalation in piracy activity. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the seizure, and maritime authorities are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.

The SIBU 1 has been seized in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, as the Gulf of Aden feeds into the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, the fastest maritime link between Asia and Europe. Approximately 12 to 15 percent of global trade by value passes through the canal each year, along with about 30 percent of the world’s container traffic. Piracy was rampant off the coast of Somalia in the 2000s and peaked in 2011, but international naval deployments and new security measures have significantly curtailed these attacks. The attack follows a marked resurgence since April, with approximately 5 cargo ships currently held hostage, including an oil tanker seized in July about 26 nautical miles (48km) off Yemen’s Hadramout province. Between 2005 and 2012, Somali pirates were blamed for more than 1,000 attacks, worth approximately $400m in ransom payments, prompting an international crackdown that all but ended hijackings in 2013.

The incident is part of a broader trend of renewed piracy activity in the region, driven by a combination of factors including instability in the East African country and the continued flow of vessels through the Gulf of Aden. Analysts suggest that naval forces are stretched thin by conflicts in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, causing international vessels to reroute and move closer to Somali waters. As instability persists in the region, these factors are pushing a renewed threat of piracy in the area, potentially impacting global trade and security.”

The UKMTO has not provided further details regarding the safety of the tanker’s crew or cargo, and the potential impact on global trade remains uncertain. The seizure of the SIBU 1 is a significant development, highlighting the ongoing challenges to maritime security in the area and the potential for further disruptions to international shipping routes. The authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are urging vessels to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
