Sammy Gyamfi’s Challenge to Afenyo-Markin: Evidence Demand Sparks Political Fallout

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, has initiated a public challenge to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, demanding definitive evidence of losses recorded in the 2025 financial performance. This accusation follows a recent statement by Gyamfi at a Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 19th, asserting that the Auditor-General’s report does not support claims of GoldBod’s financial losses, a claim fiercely contested by Afenyo-Markin and his supporters.

Gyamfi directly refuted the Auditor-General’s findings, stating that the report confirms GoldBod’s lack of losses, a position corroborated by the independent constitutional institution itself. He further rejected Afenyo-Markin’s assertion that the Auditor-General was denied access to complete information regarding GoldBod’s gold transactions, characterizing the denial as a deliberate attempt to discredit an independent audit process.

Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that officials from the Auditor-General’s office had unhindered access to all required information, as evidenced by the provision of requested documents and the satisfactory completion of management letter queries. Specifically, he stated that all documents required by the auditors were supplied and all queries raised by them were satisfactorily answered. He insisted that the Auditor-General made no adverse audit findings against GoldBod in the 2025 report, reinforcing his assertion of a clean audit.

Furthermore, Gyamfi accused Afenyo-Markin and his associates of shifting their focus after the claim that GoldBod had incurred losses failed to gain traction. He subsequently asserted that the narrative had moved to allegations that GoldBod was responsible for losses recorded by the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. He suggested a recently published report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) does not accuse GoldBod of causing these losses, challenging the Minority Leader to provide specific paragraphs, sentences, or phrases in the IMF report that explicitly blames GoldBod for the BoG’s losses.

The GoldBod CEO reiterated that this is why a single, not a single, adverse audit finding was made by the Auditor-General in the 2025 report. He urged the media and public to assess the Auditor-General’s findings and the IMF report based on the actual contents of the official documents, rather than political interpretations, as a crucial step in determining the truth.

The controversy stems from the recent publication of a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which, according to Gyamfi, did not accuse GoldBod of causing the BoG’s losses. This challenge underscores the growing political debate surrounding GoldBod’s financial performance and its role within Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. The situation is further compounded by the fact that Gyamfi’s assertion directly contradicts the Auditor-General’s findings, demanding a clear and transparent audit.”

This is a significant development in the GoldBod case, and the public’s scrutiny of the auditor’s report and the IMF’s analysis is expected to intensify as this matter continues to unfold. The challenge reflects a fundamental disagreement regarding accountability and transparency within the financial sector. The core of the dispute revolves around the interpretation of audit findings and the potential implications for GoldBod’s operational and financial stability.
