The former Ukrainian Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has issued a bold and unprecedented call for a presidential election, a move that has ignited intense debate and raised serious concerns within Volodymyr Zelensky’s government and across Ukraine itself. His statement, delivered in a video posted to YouTube on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the political landscape, viewed by many as a potential challenge to the president’s authority since the February 2022 invasion by Russia. Fedorov, 35, stated that ‘democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia,’ a sentiment echoing the anxieties of many Ukrainian citizens and observers alike. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has entered a state of martial law, effectively suspending elections, a move unprecedented in recent history. Federov, as he is now known, was unexpectedly dismissed from his position in late July, just six months after his appointment, a decision that triggered widespread protests throughout the country. His dismissal has been interpreted as a culmination of simmering tensions between himself and commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was also replaced several weeks later following weeks of mounting pressure from the Ukrainian president. Federov’s video offered no indication of his own political intentions, instead focusing on a critical need for a ‘legal, safe, and realistic mechanism’ that would allow Ukraine to restore a full democratic process, even amidst a protracted war. He emphasized the country’s systemic crisis of governance and the pervasive corruption he perceives as hindering the nation’s war effort. Zelensky has subsequently appointed Yevgeniy Khmara, a career intelligence official with a low political profile, as acting defence minister, effectively transferring control of the military to a civilian administrator. Other offers to Federov were extended, including a deputy prime minister position for military innovation, but the 35-year-old declined to return to his role as defence minister, stating that he would only return as the minister if the legal and political conditions allow for a new, democratic process. Federov also provided a detailed account of his past role, highlighting his involvement in the early days of the cyber warfare campaign, including the establishment of the volunteer ‘IT Army of Ukraine.’ Subsequently, he spearheaded a fundraising campaign called the ‘Army of Drones,’ bringing in elements of gamification to the war effort, designing a system where military units earned credits for successfully targeting Russian targets. As defence minister, he continued to focus on drone technology, high-tech warfare, and procurement, and had reportedly engaged with SpaceX founder Elon Musk to halt Russia from using Starlink satellites for drone attacks. The move has resulted in considerable disruption to Russia’s frontline operations and advance, according to reports. In a Facebook post shortly after his dismissal, Fedorov stated that he would ‘continue… to defeat the enemy through asymmetry, speed of innovation, and organisational strength.’ The situation remains fluid, with the Ukrainian government attempting to navigate a complex political landscape and the potential for a presidential election to reshape the nation’s future.”}” ,
