The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a significant clarification regarding the revised fees for Ghana Card registration and related services, stating that the changes were approved by Parliament and not unilaterally implemented by the Authority. A statement issued by Williams Amponsah Emmanuel Darlas, the NIA’s Director-General, emphasized that the current fee regime is governed by the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512), a provision of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080). This regulation was enacted to enhance revenue collection for the NIA.
The NIA explained that the revised charges took effect on February 2, 2026, effectively preceding the recent public discourse concerning the rising cost of Ghana Card services. The Authority underscored that its 276 district offices remain fully operational nationwide, maintaining that initial registration remains entirely free for individuals under the age of 25. For those aged 25 and above, a processing fee of GH¢30 applies.
Furthermore, the NIA outlined separate approved fees for essential services such as card replacement, which currently costs GH¢200, and record updates, which remain free. Specific approved fees also cover services like national identity updates and renewals. The Authority emphasized that the revised fees are currently applicable to NIA services and urge the public and media to rely on the approved fee schedule and authoritative information sources when discussing charges for these services. Accurate information is particularly critical given the potential for misinformation regarding national identity processes to cause unnecessary confusion and concern among the public.
In a separate development, Goldbod shouldn’t be credited for Ghana’s macroeconomic stability – Bokpin. Additionally, John Dumelo drilled a borehole at Accra Training College over water shortages, highlighting the ongoing initiatives aimed at improving access to vital resources within the country.
