The President-elect of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law, Isaac Nlason, has initiated a formal request to the Independent Examinations Committee (IEC) to implement a unique rewrite arrangement for students with outstanding papers, a crucial response to the transition to a new legal education system and the planned discontinuation of the existing Professional Law Course (PLC) program. This request stems from a petition submitted on August 17, 2026, addressed to Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Chairperson of the IEC, and underscores a significant challenge facing students navigating this evolving legal landscape.

The core of Nlason’s appeal centers on the impact of the new PLC programme’s discontinuation on students who have fallen behind on their coursework. He argues that the existing system, which utilizes supplementary examinations for failing more than two subjects, is not adequately addressing the specific circumstances of students facing this predicament. Specifically, he is advocating for a one-time transitional arrangement allowing students with outstanding papers to resit their assignments, effectively granting them a temporary reprieve from the academic year.

This proposal is particularly pertinent given the exceptional circumstances surrounding the implementation of the new legal education regime, which includes the strategic dismantling of the PLC program itself. Mr. Nlason acknowledges the established examination rules – which mandate failing a subject to receive a supplementary examination – while emphasizing that the petition is not intended to challenge or undermine the authority of the IEC. He asserts, however, that the request is predicated on the need for a pragmatic and compassionate solution to support students during this transitional period.

He clarifies that the request is not a call for relaxed academic requirements, stressing that students will still be assessed under the same examination standards, procedures, and requirements applicable to other candidates. The proposed measure is conceived as a practical response to the challenges presented by the transition, with the goal of preserving academic integrity while offering students a crucial opportunity to continue their studies without incurring a full academic year loss. Specifically, the SRC president-elect has requested that Part II students be given the opportunity to rewrite their papers early enough to allow for successful participation in the October Call to the Bar.

The petition also addresses the urgent need to ensure the smooth transition for Part I students who fail more than two subjects. Mr. Nlason is requesting that the supplementary examinations be organized with sufficient lead time to enable successful candidates to fully participate in the upcoming cohort, thereby maintaining academic momentum.

Furthermore, the request acknowledges the existing examination rules – which involve referring students to supplementary examinations for failing subjects – while simultaneously advocating for a more flexible approach. The SRC president-elect stresses that the proposed arrangement would not represent a request for relaxed academic standards, but rather a compassionate and practical response to the challenges facing current students, preserving the integrity of the academic program while providing a vital lifeline for those facing this transitional period.

According to a report from Minority, the GoldBod must account for GH¢22bn reported loss, highlighting the financial implications of the transition and the potential disruption to student finances. Presidential aide responded after disabled graduates rejected the petition handover, suggesting a potential shift in priorities regarding the implementation of the new system. This move underscores the importance of addressing the student experience and ensuring a fair and equitable transition for all involved.”
