The National Mining Dialogue 2026, convened at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra under the thematic ‘Rethinking the Social Licence to Operate,’ brought together a diverse coalition of stakeholders – government officials, traditional leaders, regulators, and industry representatives – representing a critical juncture in Ghana’s mineral resource management. The event, organized by Ekosiisen of Asempa 94.7 FM’s Ekosiisen in partnership with Semmis DS and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, served as a crucial forum for examining the sector’s trajectory and demanding a fundamental shift in approach. The dialogue’s core objective was to foster a paradigm shift, moving beyond traditional reliance on royalties to prioritize community involvement, environmental protection, local value addition, and enhanced socio-economic benefits for Ghana’s citizens.

The impetus for this critical call came from Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who unequivocally urged stakeholders to treat Ghana’s mineral resources as a generational inheritance, ensuring their benefits extend beyond present generations. “Mining must be a source of prosperity for all, not just a fleeting benefit for a few,” King Tackie stated, underscoring the need for equitable distribution of wealth.

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, passionately advocated for greater Ghanaian ownership and expertise within the mining sector. He argued that Ghana must move beyond merely relying on royalties and actively increase local value addition, recognizing the potential for a more robust and sustainable industry. “The current model is fundamentally flawed,” Professor Oquaye declared. “We need to empower Ghanaian entrepreneurs and businesses to contribute meaningfully to the sector’s growth.”

The discussion also centered on youth-centered approaches, with Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, presenting a bold vision: ‘Young people must have access to decent jobs, skills, ownership, and opportunities across the mining value chain.’ He announced plans for the establishment of a ‘Gold Village’ in Accra, a significant initiative designed to manufacture jewelry, gold fabrication, and further bolster local value addition.

Recognizing the environmental imperative, GoldBod also highlighted plans to reclaim 50 hectares of degraded land within the Tano Numri Forest Reserve, and support the rehabilitation of three water treatment plants affected by illegal mining. The dialogue underscored a commitment to restoring ecological balance and mitigating the impacts of mining activities.

The Minerals Commission, while acknowledging the privileges associated with mineral rights, issued a crucial warning, stressing the importance of compliance with stringent environmental and safety standards while simultaneously strengthening local content and partnerships with Ghanaian businesses. The Commission emphasized that the focus should shift to responsible resource management, prioritizing sustainable practices and minimizing negative environmental consequences.

However, the dialogue wasn’t solely focused on challenges. The discussion also highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration among government, mining companies, traditional authorities, and host communities. A collaborative framework, designed to ensure sustainable economic and social benefits for Ghana, was emphasized as the ultimate goal. The Commission reiterated the need for strategic investment in infrastructure, technological advancements, and skills development to foster a thriving and resilient mining sector. The success of this dialogue represents a crucial opportunity for Ghana to redefine its relationship with its mineral resources, moving toward a future of prosperity and environmental stewardship.
