The Ghanaian government is poised to significantly bolster its emergency medical services infrastructure with the procurement of 100 new ambulances, a move slated to occur within the next two years, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The announcement, made during a Ministry of Health High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, Volta Region, underscores a strategic commitment to strengthening emergency medical care across the country. The Minister emphasized the critical role of increased operational capacity for the National Ambulance Service (NAS), highlighting the substantial benefit of this new fleet acquisition.

According to the Minister, the acquisition of 100 ambulances represents a considerable investment in the service’s ability to respond to critical situations. The initial tranche of ambulances, sourced from the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp, has already been transferred to the national fleet, and the Ministry anticipates the addition of 30 recently retrieved vehicles, refurbished by the Air Force, to bolster the existing fleet. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term viability and effectiveness of the NAS.

Mr. Akandoh clarified that additional funding will be allocated to the repair and maintenance of existing ambulances, ensuring a continuous supply of operational vehicles. He stressed the importance of a robust legal framework for the NAS, stating that the Regulatory Instrument (LI) is vital to the Service’s operational efficiency and sustained growth. The Minister underscored that the retreat served as a platform for agencies across the sector to review performance, coordinate efforts, and collaboratively establish priorities for enhancing healthcare delivery.

The board chairman of the NAS, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, were present at the event, representing the service’s operational needs. The retreat involved a diverse group of stakeholders, including directors and senior management officials from various health agencies, all focused on evaluating progress, strengthening coordination, and charting a course for improved healthcare outcomes. The Ministry of Health stated that the provision of this fleet represents a vital step in achieving its long-term objectives, aiming to significantly reduce response times and improve access to emergency medical care for all citizens.

This investment is being viewed as a critical step in addressing the growing demands for emergency medical services within Ghana. Experts estimate that the 100 new ambulances will significantly impact the availability of medical assistance, particularly in rural and underserved areas, thereby improving overall public health and safety. The Ministry plans to monitor the performance of the fleet closely and implement continuous improvement initiatives to maximize its effectiveness.
