The Madina Divisional Police Command has issued a forceful warning to traders operating within the Madina Market, asserting a renewed commitment to combating child labour and human trafficking. The Commander of the Madina Divisional Police, Chief Superintendent Dr Sarah Aba-Afari, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that any engagement of children in commercial activities at the market constitutes a serious violation of the law and risks immediate arrest. ‘We will strictly enforce the relevant laws and take decisive action against individuals who recruit children, regardless of their origin,’ she explained. She further highlighted the Command’s determination to prevent children from being exploited and deprived of their right to education.
The crackdown will focus on mitigating the use of children for ‘kayayei’ activities, a practice that remains a significant concern within the Madina Market. The Police are actively investigating and prosecuting individuals involved in recruiting children from northern Ghana and other vulnerable communities, recognizing the transnational nature of this exploitation.
