TroyBoi has officially dropped his new single, “La La Land,” a collaborative effort with North Carolina-based rapper Morray, marking the release of his upcoming Extended Feature (FT) EP, slated for August 21st. The track, produced by TroyBoi, has been circulating across all major platforms since July 31st, solidifying its position as a key single from TroyBoi’s forthcoming project, a collaboration-focused EP designed to showcase his production capabilities across genres.
TroyBoi’s distinctive approach to bass production began with his 2018 remix of Billie Eilish’s “my boy,” which has garnered over 110 million Spotify streams, showcasing his ability to create a visceral, low-end-driven sound. “La La Land” utilizes the same rubbery, off-kilter sub-bass and syncopated percussion that defined TroyBoi’s festival presence in the first place, enhanced by Morray’s soulful, gospel-rooted vocals. Morray’s melodic, gospel-rooted style, sharpened by years singing lead in his church choir back in Fayetteville, provides a vital anchor to TroyBoi’s rhythmic section.
This marks the fourth guest vocalist single released by TroyBoi this year, following “Jungle” with Shiwa, “Way Better” with Toxic Rob, and “HUSH” with Daya, demonstrating a deliberate shift away from solo accolades and a focus on building a diverse catalog of pairings. TroyBoi states, “I’ve been a fan of Morray for a while. I sent him the instrumental and he immediately connected with it. We both saw it as an opportunity to step into each other’s worlds. That’s exactly what this EP is about, bringing together different artists, influences, and styles, while keeping my production as the common thread that ties everything together.”
The collaboration between TroyBoi and Morray has proven fruitful before. His 2018 remix of Billie Eilish’s “my boy” has racked up nearly 110 million Spotify streams, and Rihanna utilized two of his productions for her 2019 Savage X Fenty show, a placement that introduced his sound to an audience outside dance music’s usual orbit. Morray arrives with his own résumé, including over 260 million YouTube views for “Quicksand” and a versatile back catalog spanning rap and R&B, ensuring a seamless integration of his voice with TroyBoi’s production.
