Ghanaian authorities have formally arrested two individuals in connection with a series of videos circulating online that have been flagged as potentially inciting violence and offensive statements concerning Prophet Mohammed. The arrests, coordinated by the Ghana Police Service and the National Signals Bureau (NSB), follow a preliminary investigation initiated following a surge in online content suggesting harmful rhetoric. The initial reports centered on videos purportedly depicting individuals making disparaging remarks about the Prophet Muhammad. The extent of the initial investigation remains under scrutiny, but the focus has quickly shifted to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for disseminating such content.

The first suspect, Masud Abdullah, aged 35, an Imam, was apprehended in connection with a video circulating on social media platforms. The video, according to police reports, detailed a potentially violent message directed towards individuals who expressed criticism of Prophet Mohammed. The video was delivered during a sermon at a mosque in Ntensere, located within the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, a geographically isolated area. Police stated that the video’s content appears to have been captured during a public address, suggesting a deliberate attempt to provoke a reaction. The authorities indicated that preliminary investigations are currently focusing on the video’s precise wording and context to determine the specific intent behind its dissemination.

Subsequently, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) has also launched a separate investigation into a video circulating online. This video, captured by a separate source, features Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, also known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, also aged 35. The video depicts what police describe as derogatory and offensive statements directed towards Prophet Mohammed. The content of the video is currently under forensic analysis to determine its full implications and whether it constitutes a deliberate attempt to incite violence or encourage harmful behavior. Police emphasized the importance of establishing a clear legal framework to safeguard freedom of religion and expression, while simultaneously addressing the potential for online content to be misused to promote discord and violence.

The Police Service has issued a clear warning to religious leaders, preachers, community leaders, and social media commentators, emphasizing that while freedom of religion and expression are constitutionally protected, such freedoms do not extend to statements that incite violence or encourage people to harm others. They urged individuals to exercise caution and sensitivity when engaging with online content, particularly when it involves sensitive religious topics. The authorities have stressed the gravity of the situation and are committed to pursuing all available legal avenues to ensure that those involved in the creation or dissemination of harmful content are held accountable. The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively working to identify and apprehend both individuals involved. A spokesperson for the Ghana Police Service stated that they will be taking the videos and associated content to the appropriate legal channels to address the concerns raised, demonstrating a dedicated effort to combat the spread of potentially inflammatory material. The Police are also collaborating with digital forensics experts to trace the origin and distribution of the content, aiming to identify any potential networks or individuals involved in coordinating the dissemination of the harmful statements. The investigation is considered a high priority, reflecting the seriousness with which the Police are treating this matter, acknowledging the potential for real-world harm.
