David Crowley, the more centrist candidate, secured a decisive victory over Francesca Hong in Wisconsin’s governor primary, a surprising result that has significantly altered the political landscape of the state. A projection by the BBC’s partner, CBS News, early Wednesday indicated Crowley’s narrow win, halting a promising streak for the state’s left-wing movement. With nearly all votes counted, Crowley, the more pragmatic leader of Milwaukee County, achieved a victory over Hong, a prominent figure in the state’s Republican party. Anti-establishment Democrats had previously delivered impressive wins across the US, prompting leadership in Washington to reassess their strategy. Crowley will now face Tiffany, who easily secured the Republican contest, effectively ending a period of strong Republican dominance in Wisconsin. The contest was just one of several key races occurring across the state and neighboring Minnesota, mirroring a broader trend of political realignment nationwide. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Darline Graham Nordone advanced to a run-off vote later this month in a special Republican primary for the US Senate, following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. She will face off against Democrat Annie Andrews to fill the vacant seat. Crowley’s late surge in Wisconsin was unexpected, considering he briefly dropped his bid last month to support a rival. He subsequently re-entered the race with backing from Tony Evers, the state’s current governor. Hong, a Wisconsin state assemblywoman and former chef, was widely believed to be the frontrunner, entering the election day with a strong Democratic primary position. She aimed to become the first democratic socialist to govern the state, though some of her historical statements have raised questions about whether she could effectively compete against Republican opponents. Hong faced particular scrutiny for remarks regarding police funding and the US Thanksgiving holiday, which she later retracted. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both prominent advocates for insurgent candidates, largely remained out of the race. AP News reported that Hong conceded the race to Crowley, and that her campaign manager stated that Hong was ‘proud of the race we ran’. Hong’s defeat marks a significant shift in Wisconsin’s political dynamics, bringing to an end a series of wins for left-wing candidates in the state’s Democratic primaries. The Hong-Crowley contest was considered just one of several races held across the state and neighboring Minnesota across Tuesday. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Darline Graham Nordone advanced to a run-off vote later this month in a special Republican primary for the US Senate, following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. She will face off against Democrat Annie Andrews to fill the vacant seat. Crowley’s late surge in Wisconsin was all the more unexpected to many observers, given that he briefly dropped his bid last month to support a rival. He later re-entered the race with the backing of Tony Evers, the state’s current governor. Hong, a Wisconsin state assemblywoman, a single mother and a former chef, was believed by many observers to be the frontrunner as she entered election day in what proved to be a crowded Democratic primary. She aimed to become the first democratic socialist to govern the state. However, some of her historical comments raised questions about whether she could have beaten her Republican opponent. Hong faced particular scrutiny for remarks about police funding and the US Thanksgiving holiday, which she later walked back. Prominent left-wing politicians Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who both often endorse insurgent candidates such as Hong, notably stayed out of this race. AP News reported that Hong had conceded the race to Crowley, and that her campaign manager had said Hong was ‘proud of the race we ran’. Hong’s defeat brings to an end a series of wins for left-wing candidates in Democratic primaries. Additional reporting by Kayla Epstein and Sareen Habeshian”}
