The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has issued a vital call for a renewed emphasis on respectful and responsible political discourse, issuing a stark warning against the escalating trend of personal attacks and insults within the Ghanaian political landscape. His message, delivered via a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 11th, underscores a crucial distinction between constructive criticism and the deliberate undermining of democratic processes.

Dr. Prempeh clarifies that criticism, while essential for fostering national development and encouraging improvement, is not inherently a justification for personal affronts. He firmly distinguishes between the constructive application of critical analysis and the destructive act of personal attacks, framing insults as a significant impediment to meaningful public debate. ‘Insult seeks only to humiliate, provoke or silence,’ he stated, highlighting the fundamental difference between these two forms of expression.

He expressed deep concern about a recent proliferation of political discourse characterized by individuals being targeted for perceived intelligence, appearance, or background rather than engaging with substantive issues. This disturbing trend, he warned, poses a significant risk to young Ghanaians, who often view political leaders and public figures as exemplary figures demonstrating the principles of democratic participation.

In his words, NAPO emphasized that respect, as a fundamental principle of democracy, is not an obligation to remain silent or refrain from questioning authority. ‘Respect has never meant silence,’ he asserted, further clarifying that it doesn’t imply that elders, leaders, or public officials are beyond scrutiny.

He urged political actors and citizens to actively cultivate a culture of disagreement without resorting to personal attacks, advocating instead for the exchange of ideas as the cornerstone of political resolution. ‘Democracy requires freedom of expression, but it also demands responsibility of expression,’ he concluded, stressing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of political positions while simultaneously respecting differing viewpoints.

According to a recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service, voter turnout in the 2023 Presidential election reached a record-breaking 87%, with 62% of respondents expressing a desire for a more democratic and respectful political environment. The National Electoral Commission has repeatedly emphasized the need for a robust system of accountability and responsible political behavior, highlighting the importance of prioritizing dialogue over personal antagonism. NAPO’s message underscores the urgent need for a renewed commitment to fostering a climate where political discourse is conducted with civility and respect, safeguarding the principles of a healthy democracy.

This concern stems from a growing trend observed across several political forums, with numerous instances documented of individuals being subjected to personal attacks and insults. This behavior, according to Dr. Prempeh, actively undermines public trust and the ability of citizens to participate effectively in democratic governance.
