Nations FC, a prominent club in the Abidjan region of Côte d’Ivoire, is currently navigating a period of significant transformation following a challenging season marked by relegation and a crucial shift in management. Head coach Zdravko Logarušić has announced a substantial restructuring of the squad, initiating a process of identifying the optimal personnel to bolster the team’s competitiveness across multiple fronts this upcoming season. The club’s recent departure from the top flight has underscored a strategic realignment, with the appointment of the former Asante Kotoko coach, Abakasse Adnan, as interim manager. Following their relegation, Nations FC will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup, a continental competition that presents both a significant challenge and a unique opportunity for the team to showcase its capabilities on an international stage. Logarušić addressed these developments during a press conference, outlining the initial plan to trim the squad from 40 to 26 players, including 22 midfielders and four keepers, a process he emphasized will be iterative and require careful observation. ‘We initially had a significant number of players in camp,’ Logarušić explained, ‘but we made a conscious decision to streamline the squad, ensuring we are strategically positioned to compete effectively,’ he stated. The coach acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a new environment and working with players unfamiliar to the club’s established framework. ‘It’s not always easy to work with a new culture and a team you’ve never met before,’ Logarušić admitted. The team is currently focused on assessing player fitness and identifying areas for improvement, with the aim of achieving a satisfactory level of preparedness by the beginning of the season. Logarušić highlighted the importance of the upcoming African games, particularly the CAF Confederation Cup, as a critical juncture for the team. ‘We are assessing several players,’ he revealed. ‘We have some players who have just arrived two or three days ago. We have some new players, which means it’s difficult to give a precise percentage on how fit we are, how good we are, until we standardize those 50, 60, 70 players, which should be the spine of the team during the season.’ The club’s strategic approach involves a thorough evaluation of the team’s current strength and weaknesses, with Logarušić emphasizing that early observations will be crucial in shaping the team’s trajectory. A detailed assessment is underway to determine the precise level of preparedness of the existing players, with Logarušić emphasizing that the team’s immediate focus is on identifying and addressing key areas for improvement. The team’s upcoming schedule includes a crucial first-leg match against Mali’s FC Diarra in Bamako, followed by a return leg in Ghana in September. Should Nations FC progress to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, they will face the winner of the tie between Niger’s AS Zam and Burkina Faso’s ASKO de Kara in the second preliminary round. The team’s journey to the continent will be a significant test of their adaptability and determination, promising a captivating season filled with both challenges and opportunities.
