The government of Ghana has announced a significant investment of GH¢10 million over the next two years to bolster agricultural education and skills development, aiming to establish a sustainable framework for strengthening Ghana’s agricultural workforce and enhancing productivity across the sector. This initiative, dubbed the ‘Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation,’ represents a crucial step in addressing Ghana’s vital agricultural needs.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOA) has already mobilized GH¢3.5 million, representing 35% of the target of GH¢10 million, marking a substantial initial commitment. This funding is intended to support a multifaceted program encompassing agricultural education, training initiatives, and capacity building, with the overarching goal of improving the nation’s agricultural output.
Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, underscored the importance of the initial investment, stating, ‘The GH¢3.5 million already mobilized gives the initiative a strong foundation for its success.’ He further explained that the fund will be significantly expanded over the next two years, with a long-term objective of reaching GH¢100 million by 2028. ‘We are aiming to significantly expand the Fund to GH¢10 million by 2026 and GH¢100 million by 2028,’ Opoku asserted. ‘These are ambitious targets, but we believe they are attainable with collaborative efforts.’
The initiative will involve a range of activities, including expanding existing programs and establishing new ones, with the focus on improving agricultural knowledge and skills. The MOA has emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative approach, stressing that agricultural education should be treated as a shared national responsibility. ‘If every stakeholder represents here accepts agricultural education as a shared national responsibility, certainly we can achieve our dreams,’ Opoku said.
Furthermore, the government has implemented a temporary suspension of national service deployment for graduates from 13 unaccredited institutions. This move has sparked controversy and accusations of selective handling of vacation trials, raising concerns about transparency and accountability within the fund’s management. The MOA has stated that contributors must maintain a high level of transparency and accountability, ensuring that resources are properly utilized and directed towards clearly defined, essential needs.
