The Assin Fosu District Court has formally remanded Monica Ampomah, a 28-year-old trader, into police custody following allegations of aggravated assault against her 10-year-old daughter. The court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, ordered the accused to undergo a mental examination to determine her fitness to stand trial. The hearing, which began on July 21, 2026, reportedly commenced around 3:00 a.m. after Ampomah’s mother, identified as a suspect, became concerned about a whitish discharge in her daughter’s underwear while washing. The prosecutor, Matilda Osaah Buabeng, stated that the mother’s suspicions centered around a potential sexual abuse scenario, and that she was concealing information about the alleged abuse. According to police reports, the incident escalated when Ampomah reportedly woke the child and demanded identification. When the girl denied being abused, the situation reportedly escalated into a physical assault. The prosecution alleges that the accused, using a cane, then employed a metal rod to strike the child’s head, hand, and finger. The child was subsequently forcibly removed from the room at approximately 4:00 a.m. and brought to the St Francis Xavier Hospital for medical attention. The case was subsequently reported to the Central North Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service. Police issued a medical report form for the child’s examination and treatment, which has since been completed and returned to investigators. Monica Ampomah was subsequently arrested, cautioned, and charged with causing harm. The court proceedings will continue pending the outcome of the mental examination. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is ongoing.
