The Bono East Regional House of Chiefs has initiated a multi-year mediation effort to address a protracted dispute within the Konkomba Traditional Area, a dispute that has been hindering the installation of a substantive chief for several decades. The delegation, led by the President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs and Bassahene, Nana Owusu Sakyi III, engaged with chiefs, queen mothers, and elders in a formal dialogue aimed at fostering amicable resolution. This longstanding disagreement, rooted in centuries of tradition, has significantly impacted the area’s development prospects and demands urgent attention. The delegation’s objective is to facilitate a peaceful and collaborative approach to resolving the core issues that have prolonged the dispute for 15 years.
The President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs emphasized the critical role of traditional leadership in fostering community development, stressing that the stalemate undermines efforts to improve the living conditions of the Konkomba people. He repeatedly highlighted the necessity for unity and a shared purpose amongst the chiefs to effectively address the challenges.
Nana Owusu Sakyi III explained that effective development hinges on a unified and collaborative approach among chiefs. He underscored that the traditional council’s ability to champion development is intrinsically linked to the presence of peace and unity among the chiefs.
Furthermore, the Queen Mother of the Konkomba Traditional Area, Nana Boakyewaa Yedeah, voiced her support for the House of Chiefs’ intervention, expressing a desire for a resolution that would pave the way for the selection and installation of a new chief by next year. She explicitly stated, “We are appealing to the President and his entourage to help us resolve this long-standing dispute so that by next year, we can have a new chief for the Konkomba Traditional Area.” The Vice President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, Obrempong Kru Takyi II, reinforced the importance of traditional leadership, stating that without effective leadership, communities struggle to attract and coordinate development initiatives. He urged the chiefs and elders to consider withdrawing the matter from court and engage in dialogue and traditional mechanisms to resolve their differences.
The Bono East Regional House of Chiefs is actively pursuing further engagement with stakeholders, aiming to further streamline efforts to resolve the dispute and restore traditional leadership and effective community governance to the Konkomba area. The mediation process is expected to continue for several years, with the ultimate goal of securing a stable and prosperous future for the region.
