Liverpool’s first pre-season under new manager Andoni Iraola has presented significant challenges, but the emergence of 18-year-old defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe offers a glimmer of optimism. The Reds’ central defense is currently lacking numbers, leading Iraola to assign more minutes to the Austrian teenager, Ndukwe.

Ndukwe, who has already played two starts under his first pre-season game, has drawn attention with impressive performances, including a goal against Sunderland and a defensive duel against Wrexham. He was initially paired with captain Virgil van Dijk against Monaco at Anfield, and it quickly became apparent that he’d be a vital part of the team’s defense.

Joe Gomez’s injury in Liverpool’s first pre-season match, while a setback, has created a crucial opportunity for Ndukwe to prove himself. Jeremy Jacquet’s absence due to a knee issue, and Giovanni Leoni’s recovery from a serious injury, have further solidified Ndukwe’s position, allowing him to step up and impress.

After the departure of France international Ibrahima Konate, the team is scrambling to find a replacement for Van Dijk. However, the situation isn’t simple; Ndukwe’s status as a non-UK-qualified player complicates matters. He hasn’t yet achieved the required points to qualify for a work permit, meaning he cannot participate in competitive matches.

Austria’s youth international, Ndukwe, currently lacks enough points to obtain a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) for a work visa. This necessitates a pathway into the squad, with a potential ESC slot awarded to foreign players with fewer minutes.

The ESC system, designed to allow foreign players to gain experience, is currently being utilized, and clubs are aiming for four ESC spots based on the percentage of minutes clubs gave to their England Qualified Players (EQP) in the previous campaign. Clubs are not entitled to all four spots, with a 35% limit.

Liverpool’s last season saw them only getting one ESC place, which was taken by Senegalese 18-year-old Mor Talla Ndiaye. This means the team’s overall minutes are 83, with the majority of those minutes coming from Ndukwe.

Following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton, and the loaning out Harvey Elliott, the team is facing a significant challenge. The club is now exploring the possibility of a loan deal for Ndukwe, potentially allowing him to gain experience in Europe.

However, a key factor is the UK’s work permit system, which has recently changed. The UK no longer allows players to play for Liverpool in competitive matches in 2026, due to the fact that he didn’t meet the required points threshold.

Ndukwe’s next steps are expected within the next fortnight. A decision on his next move is expected to be made by January, and the club is aiming to see him feature for Liverpool this season, with a potential recall if he secures a loan.

The BBC reports that Liverpool is considering a loan deal for Ndukwe, with Lederer stating that they are still in the process of deciding where he goes in Europe. The situation is complicated by the fact that the matter of Ndukwe’s visa is a significant hurdle for Liverpool, considering the UK’s restrictions on foreign players.

Ndukwe must accumulate 15 points across a number of categories while out on loan to qualify automatically for a visa, and it’s believed that the necessary points tally could be achieved by January. The issue is that, with the right move, the necessary points tally could be achieved by January, making him a key player for Liverpool this season.

This also highlights the challenges faced by foreign players in the UK, particularly those who haven’t yet established themselves at the top level, and the complex work permit system that governs their movement.

The BBC reports that the club has an understanding with the Austria youth international, Ndukwe, to see where he ends up in Europe. The situation is a significant point of concern for Liverpool, as it could impact their team’s overall performance.

The long-term implications of Ndukwe’s situation are also concerning, given the potential impact on the team’s overall balance and the overall situation for the team.
